power and penetration?
« on: July 07, 2010, 01:48:25 PM »
has any one fire for groups and penetration? What would be the bench mark for a really good air gun at 15 yards? Like how many page in a TSC catalogue?

A better method for comparing different airguns is to use foot-pounds of energy.  Many websites like this one have the formulas built in, all you need is the weight of the projectile and how fast it is moving.

Granted, I understand wanting to know how far a gun will penetrate for hunting.  The problem is that not only will this vary by the gun used but also by the pellet used (which includes the design of the pellet and it's weight).  Not to mention, penetration is only useful to a certain point.  Complete pass through of a squirrel may not be the best for hunting.  An expanding pellet has been shown to put animals down better.  If you check out the Yellow Forum and search for predator pellets you'll find some good information on using them for hunting.

I took a few cigar boxes out back and shot them with Flat nosed, dome nosed, Hollow points and the Gold domed things by Gamo.
Most of the Flat points would bounce off of a wood box.
The 9.3 grain flat points would crack the wood on the far side of the box.
The Ram domed ones would go in.
the hollow points would do a combo of cracking wood and going in.
The gold things would go in and out the other side.
My rifle is only accurate with the 9.3 grain RWS and the gold things.
The gold things are about 250 FPS faster than the heavy slugs.
Both have taken Crows, Rabbits, rats, and other back yard vermin.
One of my favorites are ghophers.  They are a challange to me.  Quick hose to the hole.  Set up the shooting mat, the shooting bag and the pellet rifle aimed at the hole.  Read a book and wait for the ghopher to reseal his hole and take the head shot.

This is strange, but I was looking for a "bench mark" To compare .22 CBs. Since I'm comparing apples and oranges penetration is the only cross reference I can think of. I can try to match the groups Gun Test got woth the rifles they tested. If I can beat an inch that would put me in the ball park.

No contest.
The 22 CB weighs about 4 x what the 177 pellests do, moving at 90% the same speed.
I have been sitting here for a few minutes trying to think of a center fire match up that would be similar.
the only thing I can think of is 30 Mauser and 45-70.  But the bullet weights
The 30 is smaller and faster than the 45-70 and weighs about 4x the 30.
There is no contest in penitration between the two.
even changing the bullet types on the 30 mauser the large mass of the 45-70 will sail it 3X to 5X further than any of the mauser bullets throug the same media at the same range.
For the back yard I use both.
Anything skipping across the yard gets the 177 or in a tree.
everything else gets the 22 CB.  My tube fed and my Cz Bolts can feed them in the mag and fast second shots are possible on rabbits and rats.

I picked up some Cbees today. I want to shoot them against the Super Coliberies, And CCI CB longs. Even the Supers out shoot my little Crossman. I hate to invest a couple of hundred bucks unless it will do something my 10/22 won't. I'll keep looking for a bargain on a pumper

Won't penetrate a Cigar Box?
My Sheridan blue streak will penetrate 1\4 inch plywood
easily at 25 yards. Pellets poke their noses out of
1\2 inch. most penetrate fully.
A couple of pound block of modeling clay is
my favorite test medium. You can really get a
good idea of the impact abilities of different pellets

OK I've done alot of testing a chronoing of my air rifle. Hopefully what I'll write here will give you a answer. I have a RWS model 48 22 cal. with a 14.5 grain rws pellet I get 866fps consistantly (chrono'd) which if you do the math comes out to develope roughly 24.15 ftlbs (velocity x velocity x weight (in grains) divided by 450240) with this I can punch through a 1" pine board at 35 yards a super calibry shoots a 20 grain bulllet at 500 fps which calculates out to 11.1 ftlbs. A 22 cb round (both shorts and longs) shoot a 29 grain bullet at 750fps which calculates out to 36.2ftlbs.  I live in city limits so only air rifles are leagal. If you have a 10/22 neither of the cb rounds will cycle the action but if you try running cb shorts from the mag to the chamber by cycling the bolt it will jam up but the longs will cycle through you just would have to cycle the bolt between shots. Hopefully this will help. FAr as accuracy goes you have to find the right pellet but most will shoot below a inch at 40 yards. I have found that in my 10/22 and my other bolt action 22's the cbs will do that if you lucky so accuracy is about the same. I Have gotten 3/8" groups at 40 yards out of my model 48. long story short springers will shoot good if they are shot properly aka the light hold.

over the years i've done all sorts of tests with pellets and 'penetration'.

SIMPLICITY covered it pretty well.

do NOT underate the 'penetration' capability of a .177 when fired from a 'magnum' air rifle.

just yesterday, i wondered if my .177 RWS 52 shooting a superdome from a measured 21 yards would penetrate the siding of an old camping/storage trailer we have; it will! and darn near penetrated the opposite side, too... :o

FPE(Foot Pounds Energy) is what air rifles are guaged by.

dwalk is correct. Do  not underestimate the .177 springers. Shot a skunk at 25 yards with a remington rated at 1000fps and a squirrel at 30 yds with a 640 fps gamo. Both died on the spot. Accurate and affordable to shoot. You don't need a range to shoot a pellet rifle.
