What to do about my choice advice please.
« on: July 08, 2010, 10:16:00 AM »
Every one I know will have their opinions so here goes.
I am in the market for a 7x57 rifle and I have been looking at the Ruger #1 International as it seems that is the only one they chamber that cal in, The investment is around 890.00 delivered. I already have 2 number 1 an 06 Liberty mod. and a 2002 mod in 243 but I have also checked with MGM and they wil deliver me an Encore barrel for 390.00 with scope base and I have a bare frame and stock set and the saving would be 450.00. I know the number one is better quality but for a hunting rifle and a short gun season is it worth the investment?
I have an Encore in 7mm-08 which is about the same as the 7x57 but then it dont say 7x57 on the barrel :) :)

For me...I buy #1's because they have personality.  It doesn't bother me to have a couple of rifles in the same or similar calibers...as long as one is a #1.  For example, I would never intentionally buy a couple of bolt action 06s or 270s (unless one was a custom mauser or something similar).  But #1s...keep em comming.

Buy it...there's nothing like the cool factor!

The question comes down to are you looking for a Ruger #1 in 7x57 or an inexpensive 7x57 single shot rifle?

Like most rifles it’s a want not a need.  You have the caliber covered with the Encore 7mm-08 Remington, but if you want a 7x57 in a Ruger #1 then buy it.

Do you use the Encore frame for anything else?

I sold my entire Encore bottleneck rifle (except 223 Remington) cartridge type barrels and use bolt actions rifles instead.  I kept only specialty barrels, 209x50, 223 Remington and 454 Casull.  I just never took them hunting, so keeping them was a waste of money.  I sold my 243 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington and 30-06 Springfield.

Other than being in the same caliber (7x57), the two rifles you're considering are worlds apart in appeal, quality and "looks"... not to mention "pride-of-ownership"!

For many, many years, I lusted after a Ruger #1 International with its short, quick-handling overall length (just 36"), 20-inch barrel and Mannlicher-style stock.  And so, a few years ago, I finally gave in to my "desires" and bought the RSI in 7x57... and never looked back.

To complete the "package", I had my gunsmith install a German-made Kepplinger single-set trigger in the little RSI and I am completely and totally satisfied with what I consider the finest looking single shot rifle on the market.

I also found the little Mannlicher-stocked RSI to be very accurate AS LONG AS YOU LET THE BARREL COOL DOWN AFTER EACH SHOT.

I strongly urge you to buy the Ruger... however, it's gonna be your rifle, therefore it's your "call".   :)

Well there you go with that word want :)
Thanks for all who gave input .so I guess I want instead of need :) and yes all my barrels are on frames as I just dont like to be switching back and fourth with barrels, why are these things so habbit forming :) and I need to sell some of this stuff off, just not being used.

I'd spend the money for the Ruger.

Deaconllb: Personally, I would go for a handi in 7-08 and have it rechambered in 7X57R. :o ::) HEHEHEHE, But that's because I like to tinker and that would allow alot of coin for reloading. I realize that this was not really an option, but I sorta, hadda do it because,as said, I like to tinker. same could be done for the Ruger, but lot less coin for reloading. Course, now if I win the lottery, Ruger all the way. ;D ;D

You can't rechamber a 7mm-08 to 7x57. You maybe turn it into a 7x57AI if the Handi chamber is not too big.

Just buy a Ruger #1 in 7x57 and be done with it it. You be glad later that you did. The #1 is in a class all by it self, a most beautyful rifle and great shooter.

I have a A1 7x57 I made up from a used take off barrel, a fine shooting rifle for a used barrel 3 shots into 3/4" at a 100.

I still have a fine 243 #1 barrel that I might find some use for in the future.

Well lady luck smiled on me at the last gun show there was a fellow who was selling a Ruger RSI 1 7x57 in original box with all paper work and was bought 23 yrs ago stuck in gun safe and never shot. had it marked with a real good price, has very nice wood and finish and it is a real good shooter was only able to hunt with it one day but no deer for it this year unless I get lucky on the last special hunt day. :)

Guess I'm late on this one, but I have found it's usually better to spend the money for what you really want than buy several "make do" items and then because your unsatisfied, buying what you really wanted in the first place.  ;D. Then you have several items to sell later to try to get your money out of them. jMO

I have a #1 and have owned a couple of others......there is something about them that is the ultimate allure...the look, the lever, the wood...it is just a
beautiful piece of work.  I would spend the extra money in a heart beat.
