Palm swell on a rifle grip ?

 What is the purpose of a palm swell in the grip of a rifle ? My new browning x bolt micro hunter has one and I'm not suree how to use it or it's purpose. Thanks ???

I maybe way off but I thought they were supposed to fill/fit the hand better and provide better grip/control.  Anybody else got a handle on this?

That is correct, but it makes a stock TOTALLY right or left handed. Not quite as bad as a thumb hole stock, but
makes them very uncomfortable for a lefty to shoot from a right handed stock.

Not so,
My new CZ 452 Varmint has a palm swell for right handed people.
We were shooting it in the back yard a few weeks ago and I was shooting it left handed.
The off side of the stock is normal.

Palm swells are more of a shotgun than rifle feature.  Consistant gun mount and grip are needed to be competitive in trap and sporting clays.  Palm swells are not very helpfull in this regard unless they have been fitted to the shooter.

I have a Browning X-Bolt and have grown to really like the palm swell.  So much so that my other rifles and muzzleloader feel odd with out it.
