backing off a truck w/o ramps
« on: July 08, 2010, 01:51:51 PM »
today at the gun range (I take my four wheeler so I can get back and forth to the 200yd) I started to back off my truck and had to double check to see if the ramps were there, they were, but I imagine that a fair share of people have backed off and had a little surprise.

I have fallen off sideways trying to go up the ramps backwards a couple of times and landed hard on the port or starboard side...then dusted off and looked around to see if anyone was laughing their tail off.... ;D

never did that but when i was younger i had a yz250 4 wheeler and was loading it into my chev truck with an 8 inch lift using a set a ramps i made out of plywood and got a bit carried away and the bike wheelied over backward and i had to make a trip to the emergency room to get about 100 slivers taken out of my back. It was back when i wasnt embarrased to be seen without a shirt and it was a hot day. My kids were little and though it was real funny but it felt like someone had a torch to my back. those slivers from treated wood can be nasty.  :o

I ended up welding a 1" long bolt in the lip of my ramps and drilled a corresponding hole in the tailgate. Falling off one ramp is a good way to get yourself dead or worse. Honestly it could be VERY serious.

I always ratchet strap my ramps to the rear bumper and always try to have someone watch me back off if possible.I sure would hate to have a 600lb. plus machine on top me and no one knows it but me.

I always use the straps to hold the ramp in place.  I usually use a bifold which I like better than the others.  When loading or unloading, I stand with my right foot on the right running board and my left knee lightly on the seat.  If something goes bad I have the ability to bail without having 700 or so pounds coming down on me.

backing your truck in to a ditch or back up to a hill can make loading and unloading much safer

I stand on the side of the truck on the ground cause my gas and brake are on the same side and just walk it down. I generally ride it back up but one guy I hunt with puts his in 4 low and walks it up from the ground like I unload it.
