New deer hunting regs proposed
« on: July 08, 2010, 04:35:13 PM »
I see the state wants to shorten some of our deer seasons a bunch. There is also a proposal to lengthen the OAL of rifle cartridges to 1.8".  Too bad they don't spend their time and our money trying to improve the hunting here and not on rule changes!

With the ever-growing deer population in IN, I see not conceivable way they can shorten our season more than it already is. If it get's passed, it won't stay that way for long before something new gets passed allowing an extra long season to make up for their mistake.  As far as the 1.8" length, I like the idea. That will allow the .460 S&W and perhaps the .357 Herrett.  :-\

From what I've been reading on the proposed changes, is that they will  take effect next year it the changes are accepted. The DNR has a funny way of dealing with the deer population in Indiana. They want to shorten the gun and muzzleloader seasons and I don't see how that will help with deer reduction. I think their thinking is that with the shortened season more hunters out there moving the deer around and also hunters not passing up deer like before. It might hurt license sales since the seasons will be shortened and too little time for some to take off work to hunt.... ???

Ithink they should shorten the bowseasons an extend the gun seasons. also how do they figure the herd population every year do they have the state people out there paintballing deer so they don't miscount the population. an another thing i think they should bring back the 2 buck tags like they had in thelate 80's. but who am i kidding!

I agree. Peanut, welcome! I haven't seen you around here before. Where do you reside in IN?

I know the Dunlap name. I worked for Milestone years ago. I think they're from up there too. I deployed to Japan for a summer back in 1996. I was marched through an old WWII barracks building at Atterbury and received shots from air guns. At the time, it was the most painful thing I had ever encountered in the Army. Wish I could still say that..... :'(

I sent the following to the Natural Resources Commission:

Proposed Deer Hunting Rule Changes:

I OPPOSE a broad rule to require hunter orange on ground blinds.  Permanent ground blinds on private property should be exempt.

I FAVOR the rule to establish the Saturday before Thanksgiving as the opening day of firearm hunting for antlered deer.

I OPPOSE the establishment of a two day firearms season in October for anterless deer.  When the deer population is significantly decreased prior to the November firearms season, less deer are likely to be seen by firearms hunters thus negatively impacting the perception of a 'quality' hunting experience.

I FAVOR the establishment of a firearms season for anterless deer in December between Christmas and New Years Eve.

I OPPOSE the under 64 years of age restriction for use of crossbows during archery season.  This cutoff appears arbitrary and certainly is discriminatory. The age restriction should be struck from the proposed rule.

P.S. Well, I didn't vote for the change in time zone because I am not a member of Indiana's State Legislature.  But I strongly supported the change because unlike retirees, my time at home is determined by my employer's work schedule.  Yep, despite what you see on television, there are actually  people still employed from 0800 to 1700 (and longer).  There's no doubt my neighbors were upset when I was out mowing my lawn in the bright pre-DST sunlight at 0500.  And I was just as upset when I had only two hours of daylight for fishing, gardening, etc. after work.  DST is for the working man with an outdoor lifestyle.  Retirees can get up and go to bed whenever they want to so they can leave their clocks alone!

i have deer hunted from the ohio river to michigan border,  but here in east central indiana where i most generally hunt, there arent as many deer,,, period!  between all the amish out shooting ANYTHING that is brown, to the blue tounge we had 2 years ago, we just dont have the numbers.  if they are going to lenghtend any season it should be the early archery season.  i to took the survey, i hope it goes to good use.  myself only got to hunt about 6 days all of last year thru early archery clear thru muzzleloader season due to work schedule.  the one buck rule is a good rule, but season should start earlier for archery and if anything else they should extend muzzleloader.  this is just my opinion, and i am in adams county were amish rule, many amish dont bow hunt or muzzleloader hunt.  they all got a shotgun tho, and supposedly a license.  i know many of you are in heavily populated areas of the state, but in adams co you are lucky to see a deer anymore.  i am sure there is a need for rule changes in different areas, but these would kill all our deer clear out.  like i said just my opinion.  i take my deer hunting pretty serious, its means for table fare for us.  i dont shoot baby deer and if i can pass on does i do.just my thinkin, i have a 4 yr old little boy i want to take hunting, and i want him to be able to see deer when we go out, not amish buggies with an 75 lb deer in the back.  just me i guess.

I live in Wells Co.and I agree with korkskru, not nearly as many deer and the same in Blackford Co. I also go to Orange Co. and see more deer there in one day than I see all year in Wells and Blackford. I spent the money and had a PCR built just to deer hunt with and now am facing the possibility of losing half of my hunting season. I have a custom .45 muzzleloader and again the possibility looms of losing half of my season. I am not a bowhunter. I can't use elevated stands and can't pull a bow.  My time for deer hunting is limited and I have to make the most of it. I hardly ever get to hunt during the week, just on weekends. Changing the gun season dates and shortening them will have a severe impact on my hunting. The average working guy is going to get the short end of the stick on the reduced huntng season.

I've been reading about the new regs and thought I'd offer my opinion, FWIW.

The state is really pushing this 2 day October antlerless only season and the CHRISTmas 7 day antlerless season as bookends for a shortened 9 day gun that starts the Saturday before Thanksgiving and a 9 day muzzleloader that starts the Saturday after gun ends.  Apparently the state feels 4 opening days will drum up excitement, additional tag sales and additional kills.

Basically, bow hunters are picking up 7 days in November during the rut and the state is hoping that gun hunters will buy a bunch of bonus doe tags and kill 25% more does.

I bowhunt and gunhunt but I don't think it's fair to expect one segment of the hunting population to enjoy additional prime time while another is losing that time and being asked to kill even more deer than before at additional cost.

What I think is going to happen is button bucks are going to get pounded with these rule changes, gun hunters that have lost 40% of their buck hunting time will be less choosy about the buck they kill and I have to wonder if in the long run it will negatively effect the buck herd most of all.

Finally, this xbow thing is nuts.  You can only kill one buck in Indiana per year.  Who cares what you kill it with?  And if the state really wants more antlerless deer killed, why not allow the xbow for all to use during the early archery season?   It might help retain hunters who opted out of bowhunting in the past or recruit more men, women and kids into bowhunting.

Tell every deer hunter you know what is pending. We can't allow this to happen.

I got an email from the DNR today:  The proposal is to have a 2 day antlerless gun season in October, and the regular season opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving and rubs for eight days.  The muzzleloader season will be shorter also.  NUTZ.

The DNR has given "preliminary approval" to the new regs that will take effect in 2011.

A 2 day antlerless only hunt the second week of October.

Shortening the gun season to 9 days and moving it to Thanksgiving week.

Shortening the muzzleloader season to 9 days.

A 7 day antlerless only season from CHRISTmas day to New Years day.

The state held a meeting yesterday but wouldn't allow the public to speak.  There is supposedly going to be few "shut up and listen" meetings where the DNR (and the groups behind these changes) tell hunters why this is such a great idea.

Finally, there is supposed to be two meetings (one north, one south) where the public is supposed to be able to respond to the "proposals".

I personally think this is a done deal.  Some like the changes, some don't.

I really don't care for the new proposal, but I think it is going to happen no matter what negative input is said about it. Like Joe Dirt would say DANG!!!. What I mean by this is that you can only kill one buck with the OBR right, so why mess with days to gun hunt :: ???... I think the rules should have pretty much stayed the same, just thinking about the situation.... :-\

How is this going to make things better? I don't get it.  I REALLY don't like the two days in October part.  Somebody explain it to me.

Take the opening of gun hunting out of the rut, shorten the number of days to hunt Bucks. Reduce the number of does so the bucks are more active during the rut = TROPHY ARCHERY BUCK HUNTING. Now all they have to do is raise the nonresident Buck tags to the same level as some of the other midwest trophy hunting states and we will be just like them. You had better own land, be able to out bid outfitters or clubs in order to hunt private ground in any area that typically produces trophy bucks. The rich or lucky will hunt private land and the average hunter will join the rest of us on public land. The hunters that don't bow hunt and have jobs are going to take the hit.

The reason for the new rule is because IDNR found out I just got back into hunting after a 30 year layoff. They found out I had too much fun tromping around the woods for 30 days they decided I had too much time on my hands, so now they are only going to let me wander around lost for 16 days instead of 30 days. You bow hunters better count your lucky stars I don`t bow hunt or your season would be chopped in half too. Huuummm, I think I just might go out and buy me a bow!!!!

I have already quit giving my fishing dallors to Indiana. I guess I will cross the state line to buy my hunting gear for now on as well.

How does reducing a season reduse the herd? Maybe bowhunters could kill more deer without gun hunters bothering them?

They have this posted on the Louisville news channel also. http://www.wlky.com/news/24364021/detail.html

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indiana panel has given its preliminary approval to new deer-hunting rules wildlife officials say are needed to reduce the state's large deer herds.

The proposed rules endorsed Tuesday by the Indiana Natural Resources Commission include adding two new deer hunting seasons for antlerless deer. They are part of the state Department of Natural Resources' strategy to address rising problems with the state's deer herds.

The commission will hold public hearings on the rules before voting on final adoption.

DNR fish and wildlife section chief Mitch Marcus said the changes would move Indiana toward a "focused, strategically targeted deer-herd reduction" at a time of record deer-vehicles collisions and growing complaints about deer damaging crops and property.

I also agree with this.  I don't think they should have seperate seasons for seperate weapons.  I don't see why bow hunters should be the only ones to be allowed to hunt when it's not freezing out.  I'd rather they copied the carolina's hunting regs from August to Jan.  I'm still happy with my Puma 44mag and I hope they never take that away.
