45 colt classic carbine
« on: July 09, 2010, 06:36:37 PM »
Hey guys,
Been a long time since I visited, but I got a new 45 colt classic carbine yesterday, and had a question or two and knew that I could get an answer here.

I was wondering about loading for it. What pressures is it capable of handling?
I bought one box of winchester 225 hollow points. It shoot these nice, but @ 30 bucks for 20 is not for me to do a lot of shooting.

any info appreciated.

Anything you want to load in it, the frame is the same SB2 as the 500S&W, I rechambered mine to 460S&W, lots of em here in Casull also, congrats and have fun.  ;)

I like to load mine for the carbine with 25gr. Reloader7 and a 300 gr. Hornady XTP Magnum or 300 GR. gas checked lead bullet.  I am also geeked about trying the newer FTX bullet with this load or one that's close.  The Reloader7 reduces the kick to more of a hard push and gets great velocity.  Mine will shoot 1.5" to 2" with the factory iron sights at 100 yards using this load.  It's a little too fast to use the standard XTP's although a slightly downloaded version would work nice with the 230 or 250 gr xtp's in my opinion.  I also shoot some light 200gr. RNFP leads through mine for a plinking load with 9gr. Unique.  No gas check needed for these and they are a joy to shoot.  My 12yr. old daughter even likes shooting these a lot.  I do use a slip on small Limbsaver recoil pad when shooting as I am limited to about 10 shots before I have had enough of the bigger ones.  I am also in the process of trying out my first set of 777 bp substitute rounds with this gun and a 255gr. lead swc.  8)  Enjoy your little carbine.  I think it's one of the best pointing accurate little guns with a good thump ever.  I am planning on it being my primary deer rifle.

They're mini-45-70's when ya load em up.  I make no bones about it, the rascals kick hard with that metal butt plate and hot loads, :o I changed mine out for a different frame and stock set.  Now I have a Buffalo Classic in 22 Hornet. ;D  I use 300 gr Hornady XTP-Mag's in mine.  Those are for the 454 Casull and work great. ;)  DP

Out the door price on the dealer near me through Gallery of Guns is $304 including state sales tax.  Also, with Davidson's you get a free lifetime warranty if you register your gun for it on their site.  If you are going to modify it, however, I believe it voids that warranty.

http://www.galleryofguns.com/genie/Default.aspx?item=CR-45LC&mfg=Harrington+%26+Richardson&mdl=All&cat=2&type=All&cal=45LC&fin=All&sit=All&zipcode=48858

Just copy and paste the link into your browser and change the zipcode to yours or go directly to the site and pick the gun from the Gun Genie with your zipcode in place.

Then hit instant quote.

Not when you consider CDNN has been selling them for $229.99 plus $18 shipping, I'd give em a call and see if they have any left if you're interested in a bargain, they still had them in stock 2 weeks ago, it's still listed on page 71 of their current catalog.

Hey you quote those guys often.  Is there some secret to finding their prices online for guns, or do you just call them?

They don't list their guns online, but the price is in their catalog which can be downloaded(if you have broadband, it's 27Mb) at the link I posted, I called them Friday before last and they said they still had them in stock.

Well Pete, my original idea was to keep it NIB for one of my granbabies...  :-\  But on the way home tonight I got wonderin how it would do with them pointy Hornady FTX's I got.   ;D

Ima gonna work up a 500 gr. load for the 45-120 for the MI UP though.  I hear them big ol' yankee deer take a good bit a killin!   ;D

One of my Club Bros is from the UP.  He says I do NOT want to go up there in November!   :D

At this price I'd be tempted to buy it, sell the barrel, and use the action and stock for my 25-20 project (eventually).

I haven't shot the FTX out of my .45 colt BC yet, but they really perform stellar in my .45-70 BC.  I'm using 300 gr. XTP Magnums with 25 gr. Reloader7 out of my carbine atm.  Intending to use that for deer this fall, unless the FTX outperform them once I get some to test.  I'm still load developing on my Ruger and .45-70, so will probably not be till next month.  Let me know how they work if you try them out. ;)

I've actually done them both.  Paco's original load data was for a 250 gr. bullet, so when I first started loading them I used 250 gr. XTP with 25 gr. RL7.  I had a batch of the 250's which were dejacketing in flight, however, so I switched to the 300 gr. XTP Mags and really liked them, but I dropped down to 23 gr. originally, since it was a heavier bullet.  I saw no pressure signs at that point, however, so I did a ladder from 21 to 25 with the 300 gr XTP's and found that my best accuracy was at 21 gr. and yet even at 25 gr. I saw no pressure signs in my firearm which has a tight chamber.  I actually used 21 gr. for last deer hunting season, but which would be more accurate in yours is anyone's guess.  They seem safe up to 25 gr. and Paco's original article stated that 25 wasn't maximum, but if I were starting loading for a new carbine, I'd probably do the ladder from 21 to 25 as I did and see where your best accuracy/velocity happens.  8)
