Here are a few things that worked for me, when I have tried to be intentional about coyote hunting, rather than seeing one as a consequence of deer hunting:
I bought a "quiver rabbit" for about $ 30; its basically a rabbit hand puppet sitting on top of an out-of-balance battery-powered motor on a stake that you stick in the ground. The motion catches their eye and they start easing in on it, and they are so fixed on it they don't see you. Its great for a high spot in a large open field, if the hay is cut down to about 8" or less.
I saw on some show where the guy called one in and it was trotting; he trained his gun on it and yelled "yip" like a pup; it stopped and popped its head up just long enough for him to get a still shot. I tried this and it worked. Apparently it doesn't have to be a very good yip, just a real one, not recorded.
Also, once I was sitting in a tree stand looking over a large field, and about 400 yards away some crows that had been gleaning in the field for an hour just took off all of a sudden and it caught my attention because I was hoping they wandered my way. The reason they took off was cause a coyote was walking by. So you might watch for some other animals reacting to a coyote's presence.
