Golf ball cannon
« on: July 10, 2010, 05:03:56 AM »
I have a 1"bore 3" od mortar I built a few years ago. Thinking about boring it out to golf ball size.  Its about 8 inches deep right now.  How long should I leave the 1" chamber?

One inch chamber is pretty big for a Golf ball mortar chamber.  Mine is  1/2.

To determine how deep a one inch chamber you need to go to the safe loads and cannon plans stickiy at the top of the forum and look at Switliks Small cannon load graph.  Find one inch and look for the maximum safe load...190 grains I believe.  Weigh out 190 grains of powder. Drill a one inch hole in a block of wood until the hole is deep enough to hold the powder, measure the depth of the hole.

190 grains is a lot of powder for a golf ball mortar.

Not for low-earth orbit.    ;)

what did you use it for, firing projectiles or just as a salute mortar?  should make for a loud report.

All I ever shot out of it was shotgun shot a few times.  Never measured anything. just dumped in some powder, wad, shot and another wad.  Took cover behind a big oak. Time to learn the safe way to do these things.

True, but not TOO big if you're launching Fox balls instead of golf balls.
