Smokemjoe,

I'll second CW's observation: For 23 bucks you did one heck of a job, and you're probably going to get a lot more enjoyment out of it than you could get investing the $23 in any other activity that I can think of.

Tim and John are right, $23 well spent.

I am going suggest for aesthetics only that you might want consider shortening you barrel.  http://www.americanartillery.org/aaa/mrt.html construction guidelines suggest a barrel of no more than 2 time the projectile length.   Might also make it easier to service your barrel and in particular your chamber..

Didn't I say aesthetics?  I thought I did.

You think it looks fine long barrel mortar like. I think it looks long barrel mortar awkward and tried to say it tactfully.  You think a long barrel project is fun, I think making the gun look right also is fun.

We each have our opinion of what we think a gun should look like and we are entitled to say so.  If you think this gun looks fine with a longer barrel you can say so and I will not attack your position. I can also say that I think the barrel would look better if it were shorter and shouldn't be criticized for my opinion any more than you should.

The gun owner can take it for what it is worth.

I never said that I think it looks fine. You are reading into it as if I questioned your opinion. ???  I just do NOT believe that the AAA should be introduced as a case for aesthetics. Nothing personal. I just cannot fathom why the AAA should be used/quoted to reinforce a personal opinion. That puts opinion into a different prospective.

Opinions are best kept to ones self when dealing with a creative property.  You would have to be an artist to appreciate that.

I view the piece in question as a work of art; created by an artist that had a specific idea and followed through with it.

"The gun owner can take it for what it is worth", is a rude, insensitive follow-up statement. Think about it!

I exhibited some of my WTC sculptures in a gallery and out of the hundreds of visitors coming through and were sobbing in front of my pieces (a box of tissues was placed at every sculpture), I only heard one shmegegge offer an opinion that shed a negative light on one of my pieces. The gentleman in question, stated that, what I did:  "wasn't the way the twin towers should look".  He said that  "everyone knows that they were made of steel and glass; just look at the pictures.  The wood doesn't look right. It looks dumb".

I shot him! >:(

This was set at its place"

ETERNAL FLAME
Let your mind's eye pierce the wall of copper flame beyond the twin towers.  Imagine the field in Pennsylvania and the rubble beyond the manicured lawn in the District of Columbia.

What was done today, was not just done to America but to all of Mankind.

Begining with this day, we will approach the future as children walking backwards; seeing where we have been but not knowing where we are going. There will always be AN ETERNAL FLAME burning in our hearts and in our minds.  rrc

nb: I still own all four of my WTC works. Some things just aren't said and some things just aren't done.

SmokemJoe I think your mortar looks OK .

I would maybe call it a Conferate Howitzer so some Old Marine and a Sensitive Artist type dont point fingers at each other .

Doug check out I a peacemaker ! :D

Does a former Drill Instructor make a really bad pyhciatrist ?

Does the Atrist think the WTC was made of wood ?

See below

Yes , No  :D

I am taking liberties here cause I am a former Marine (Never In Country OR a Drill Instructor) ;)
Also I must confess to being abit sensetive artist type too .

DON'T cut it.  Call it a Lyle Gun and it'll be histerically correct and DD will be able to concieve of it as a legitimate replica!   :D :D :D :D

Richard I dont think 90 % of the peepoloids out there would know what that is ...VERY NICE .

There a nice tribute song to Ira Hayes on a Johnny Cash album 10,000 highways I think .

it sends shiver through me ....... eewwwhhhhh !

It does look like a Lyle gun ! put a boat hook and a coil of line next to it and everyone will like it . Even though U are the only one who needs to be satified .

Then once you have every one convinced , you change your mind an call it a mortar agian ....I'm bored what can I say .

Nice carriage too . What kinda wood is it ?

Art, don't even get me started on that subject.

I do like the Iwo sculpture.

I does look like a like Lyle gun, it doesn't  look like a mortar.

I think it looks good. Not 'correct' but still neat. Bet you can get some good range with steel balls out of it.

Don't go by me though; check out the 2.25" bore monstrosity I built...

This one is 1" bore and has about a 4 cal bore length. Any shorter and it wouldn't look right to me, but that's just me...

my few builds are not 'correct',  but I get a lot of pleasure from the 'BOOM' factor. The louder the better ;D
these two builds look to have a lot of 'BOOM' factor built in.

Victor,
How much does this thing weigh?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Rich,

What is the size of "submissions"?

You already know I admire the "World Trade Center" pieces; when I open the picture of the WTC sculpture you posted all I get is the same size picture, no enlargement.

Gary,
Just for those who do not know....I will explain what is obvious to you.

It has always bothered me that the men who busted their butts to raise the FIRST & REAL Iwo flag, have faded into the shadows, while the raisers of the second flag are solid as steel in history and in our minds too.

Look closely at the shadow figures that are ment to be fading into the mist of time; acomplished by having the outlining rods make an incomplete silouhette.

Look at the flag above them. It is solid....a real flag.

Now look at the figures that are solid in our minds and history...solid steel figures.  They are raising a shadow flag.

I have them all there because in reality, thousands upon thousands of men that were on that hill from Hell, are represented here. The ones we remember, the ones we have forgotten and the ones few ever knew.

Ancient Celtic warriors were glorified and sometimes vilified by the druidic bards; whom with the art of language as poets, introduced and kept alive their history.

Now, that is done by sculptors, painters and song writers.......artists all!

My mother-in-law came to America with her sister whom through marriage, became the aunt of one of the second and historically famous flag raisers. He never made it off the hill.

Tick me off and I will do a sculpture of you ::)

Richard "The Troubadour"

BTW: It is "functional art" in that the flag of sheet copper, gives direction and moves with the breeze 8)

John,
I hope this makes it through censorship. I apologize; it is not a cannon but it is Fire & Smoke. Sometimes we have to allow for social significance in our daily lives.

The "Eternal Flame" is a modest 17" tall X 19" wide X 8" deep. I did it as a convenient size so that it might easily find space anywhere, even a wall shelf. The candles give it a religous feeling. Sorry but I do not know how to transfer larger and miltiple images from the GB host. I have to use my Mickey Mouse system.

Thanks Rich, now we can get a good viewing of "The Eternal Flame".

While I'm glad you gave the dimensions of the WTC sculpture, I was really asking about the size of the Iwo Jima flag raising piece; I thought the title was "submissions" because that was on the photos. By the photo I would guess that it is near life size, but sometimes the apparent size can be decieving in a photo.

50" long X 49" tall X 12" wide. Very heavy and it doesn't come with wheels :'(

My wife and I built our home almost almost single-handedly, starting in 1970 and it was positioned on our 11 acres, exactly where it is because...................that rock was there and where I wanted my flag pole to be in our back yard.  The Iwo design was on my mind and was fabricated and added around 2006. 8)  I used to keep my cannon on the rock when we entertained.

Once, when the Capital District's Action News Team came down to do a special on me, they had me move away from the cannon so it would not appear in the footage and had me stand by our LP gas tanks. I guessed that the viewers had never seen LP gas tanks and that must have all had 15th century breech-block cannons of their own. :-\

Victor,
How much does this thing weigh?

Less than it looks. Maybe 40# I guess. The cheeks are 1.5" aluminum and the base is channel iron.
