Inside of 25 to 30 yards you should have pass thru shots. Every deer I've ever shot was a pass thru except one buck almost directly under my stand and I spine shot him by accident. Sharp broadheads within range and enough power behind them will cut thru ribs like butter.

Pass thru's are not always the case, as in my doe last year that was shot at 5 yards.  The arrow a Carbon Express Aramid KV with a Grim Reaper Razortip 100 gr, should have gone sailing right on thru.  If you hit rib bones, or any other bones, you may not get a pass thru.  My bow was a Mathews Drenalin set at 70# with a 28" DL and my arrow speed was clocked at 283 fps.

So it depends on a lot.

Lee Lakowski on TV shot a buck using the new Z7 at full power, still had an arrow sticking out the shot side of the buck with his shot.

Its not magic.

Once that arrow has quit oscillating from the shot you ought to get pass throughs easily enough. At very close range that arrow sometimes is still wobbling so much it will waste a bunch of its energy straightening up inside the target. Bone and shoulder knuckles are another story.  Ribs, no  problem unless it's a very old strong deer, scapula, trouble again. I'm no fan of mechanical designs, if that were a Thunderhead, which I have a lot of experience with, expect compleate penetration. Much of the time you will get pass throughs.

I tend to not get pass throughs myself, I find myself waiting for angling away shots and then aim for the opposite shoulder. If I get what I want I have a deer with two jellied lungs and a broken leg on the other side. The arrow is typically found in two pieces about 8yds from the hit, and the deer about 90yds further.

When I started bow hunting with a compound bow (an old Bear Whitetail Hunter) set between 60-65 pounds I NEVER got a pass thru not one single time. I switched to a bow with 82 to 85 pound pull for my next few bows and got a pass thru EVERY TIME.

What you'll get with more modern bows and more speed I dunno but that was my experience.

If you want a pass thru every time, its all about the law of physics.... that is why I went to using very heavy arrows, even in a modern compound I began shooting a 570 gr arrow.  Sorry to say that I won't be using that set up this year, becuase I will be hunting with still very heavy arrows but, with a 55# longbow instead.
