cheek riser 4 a predator stock?
« on: July 10, 2010, 06:31:26 PM »
just got a 22-250 predator stock on it black plastic one how do i go about making a cheek rest for it it ? seems it is about 1" to 1 1/2" low for me i have that problem of most stocks. thing of one of the pool noodles but haven't ever seen any in black. think the black neoprene pipe insulation might work ? thinking about slitting it down the middle and use  wrapping it on the top of the stock and use zip ties to hold it in place til know if i want to glue/ epoxy it . whats your opinion ?

Black foam pipe wrap is already split down the middle and comes with some type of adhesive along the split. Zip ties in black would hold it in place. I'm thinking of doing the same thing to my Ultra .204.

I think there is a pic in the FAQ's of one of those stocks with a cheek piece on it.

Its not going to be high enough for you but......I took an old neoprene type mouse pad cut it into strips, with the rubber facing out I tacked (nailed) 3 strips onto the stock that is on my 500 S&W, put a slip on shell holder over it.  Raised up my cheek weld a bit and gave a soft place so it doesnt feel like I was in a UFC fight when I am done shooting it.

I'm not familiar with the Predator stock, but there's another guy making adjustable combs, a fellow named Karsten.  His comb was featured in an article at Sniper Central and I see that Savage is using his comb on the Long Range Hunter series of rifles.

From what I'm able to understand, it's fully adjustable, is installed with a hand drill, and is recommended highly.

The guy doesn't have a website, but the article gives an email address.  I'm thinking about ordering a couple and giving them a try.

I use the pipe insulation held on by double sided tape on one of my rifles.  The hard kicker doesn't bite my cheek that way....

For trials I like wrapping black plastic electricians tape around 'whatever'. Easy to do and easy off when you are ready to change. Those cable ties always have that lock end that snags somewhere.

I have the same problem with rifles, scope is always to high so I use closed cell foam and a neoprene shell holder to fix the problem, compress a piece of 2", 3" etc. until you get the thickness needed. ;D Slip it under shell holder. If you use shell holder with velcro it is easier use two sided tape or line-up on shell holder and stitch into place.  ;) Hope that helps!

The BEST comb height adjustment available for all types of adjustments (and the one that feels the best against your cheek) is the Beartooth Comb Raising Kit.  Cabelas carries it in both black and brown, with or without cartridge loops and it's less that $20.00.  I have one on 4 of my rifles and they work as advertised and feel perfect because the material is made out of the same stuff that wet suits for skin divers is manufactured from.  With the different foam shims, you can raise the comb height from 1/4" to over 1 1/2".  I use the black one for synthetic stocks and the brown one for the guns with wood stocks.

Choate makes the Varmint stock for H&R, cheek pieces in two heights are available for it.

Tim

Tim:

Would you know, by any chance, the height of the Chaote cheek pieces?
It's not in their website (that I could find). I emailed them once with the question and got no answer back.

Thanks in advance,

argon

They don't say much about it even in their .pdf file, just that the standard is for low mounted scopes and the tall for higher mounted scopes, the tall is 5/16" taller which doesn't help much!  ::)

I use the foam pipe insulation, trim the sticky part off and trim the ends on a taper and  tape the ends with electrical tape. I then slip one of them elastic shell holders over the top. It works great and gives you about a 1/2" or so of rise. Feels good on the chin also. Zeak

;D  yes they do have customer service  just got this email from choate

"The cheek peace comes with a Phillips head screw, you have to drill a
hole in the top of the stock where you want the cheek piece mounted. The
standard is 1/2 inch tall and the Tall is 1 inch tall.
Thanks  "

My 1/2" one is not mounted @ this time and was a little harder to measure... but it is a very proud 1/2" if that is what they say it is. Kurt

And if you are like me, and dont like drilling extra holes in stocks, the dbl sided tape should work on those as well.

I have to say Choate is a very good company and if you have ever talked to them, they are willing to work with you for what ever you need. They seem to be small enough to do that but large enough to be a contender.. kind of hard this day in age.
