AWOL for a while
« on: July 11, 2010, 12:37:23 PM »
Guys, I won't be posting much for a few days. Made a trip to the emergency room this morning with severe chest pain. Good news is my heart and lungs checked out ok considering the shape they're in. Bad news is the tendons, the cartilage that holds my ribs to my breast bone, plus the muscles and nerves throughout my whole chest are inflamed big time. I'm talking light up your life intense pain . They shot me full of morphine and steroids and sent me home with prescriptions for more and with orders to follow up with my primary care doc soon as possible plus orders for bed rest till further notice. It's an effort to function and even think clearly under the circumstances, not that I can normally anyways to hear my wife tell it! lol Anyhow, I'll survive. I stay alive just to pi** off my enemies. Will post what I can, when I can. Dee, keep being the voice of reason bro. You too Powderman. Wishing you all the best and may you always walk in beauty.....Spirit Hawk ^i^

Considering the events and stress lately--a little R&R in the hospital might be just what you need.

Well the meds have wore off enough I can at think before taking more. I'm on my laptop laying in bed. Thanks for the kind words, prayers. and well wishes everyone. They are much apreciated.

Bret, I was exsposed to a wide range of toxic chemicals in the military and they've wrecked havoc throughout my body. Been dealing with this for quite a while but it's rapidly getting worse.

William, you don't know the half of it. I got two calls today. One my grandson blew the motor in his Mustang. Drove through water in a heavy down pore and it got sucked up into the open air intake. The other call was to tell me my youngest sister who lives in Georgia had a house fire. Everone got out ok but they lost everything. She's married with 3 kids. Stress, h**** what's that?

Best of luck with your new  job Dee. Wishing you nothing but the best sir......SH^i^

Spirit Hawk, same thing happened to me about 30 years ago. I pulled a back muscle and when the rib muscles tried to compensate for it, they cramped like Holy Hell.................thought I was having the Big One!

The Doc gave me some Robaxin (muscle relaxant) and fixed it in a heartbeat. You might ask him about it.

Thanks everyone. Found out that what is the main cause of the pain is that I had Shingles a few weeks ago and the viruse has gone into my chest. it attatches itself to nerves thus causing severe nerve pain. I compare it to the intensity of kidney stones. When in the chest the pain makes it very dificult to breath. Morphine and Prednisone seems to be the standard treatment. Going to see my Primary care doc to see if he wants me in the hospital or what.

SM, muscle relaxers won't work on nerve pain but thanks.

Heather, I'll PM you.

Shingles is really bad news and it can crop up again at any time. Maybe a sweat lodge would help since its Sundance time. Lyrica or Massive doses of Ibuprofen is standfard, once the acute pain and inflammation has subsided. But an antiviral med, specifiic for Herpes Zoster is usually prescribed for the immediate flare up, no matter where it has started again. I've had 2 flare ups of shingles in 20 years, and it is miserable. Blessings and prayers.

Sorry to hear of what you are going through. Hope they get you mended and feeling better soon!
Also sorry to hear of your sisters house fire, always hate to here when someone loses everything. If there is any way we could set it up to send some cash her way to help out let us know, I'm sure those of us too far away to help in other ways would be glad to help in that way.

Wish you the best and a speedy recovery.

Step father-in-law was on in Guam a couple of years ago.  Up until then I thought Shingles was a sickness left over from times gone by.  He got some treatment in Guam, a little more in Hawaii and it continued after he made it home.  Rough enough coming down with it at home, but in the far Pacific rather nasty.

The wife has been talking about getting a shot to prevent it.

Shingles is what you get if you've had Chicken Pox as a kid and it comes back on you. The virus never really leaves your body. If you've ever had a pinched nerve try and imagine the whole length of several nerves being pinched. So far I'm staying out of the hospital. Taking things easy as I can. Pain pills help some but mainly trying to just do little things to keep my mind ocupied. Breathing is the biggest problem but I'm managing ok so far as long as I breath shallow. Just can't take very deep breaths. See my doctor tomorrow and will see what he says. Going to try and convince him to let me stay home if possible. I know with my heart and lung issues this is serious but not worrying till I have too. Thanks for the kind words and prayers. Talked to my sister and she's trying to keep her spirits up. She has a positive attitude that I know will get her throught it. Thanks for the offers of help they are very much apreciated. There was a time folks helped each other out and it's good to see those values still exist in some folks. The world could use more of that. For myself I'll be fine. Pain is nothing new to me. Just have to ride it out. Thanks again.......SH ^i^

best wishes and hope you can heal fast SH. I watched my 90 yr mom struggle with shingles and it was very hard on her - she had it on her right arm.  I think shingles crops up when your body is stressed.  One thing to watch carefully; the docs gave my mom the drug neuronton or neurontin not sure of spelling. It helped some but I read later it has some odd side effects - can't recall the details now but I recall feeling very wary of the stuff. If your docs prescribe it I'd grill them hard about ALL the side effects and interactions with other medications. I'd want to be very careful about taking it, especially for any length of time. At the time my mom was taking it we had hired a private nurse to help her. The nurse finally figured out that my mom was getting another medication that conflicted with the neurontin they cancelled each other out so the net effect was little help to my mom.

Heck, I'll be 56, after seeing my mom's pain, I'd get the Shingles shot today if they'd give it to me but I think you have to be 60.  Huh, I don't want to rush being 60 just to get a shot.

I find  your posts very thought provoking SH so hope you can recover soon.

Kathie got shingles a few months ago.  After seeing the pain she was in, on top of her other ailments, I got the shot!  It is some nasty, painfull stuff!   :-[

My dad went through shingles at 76. He is generally a very stoic man but you could see it took a toll on him. Fortunately he and my mom were up here in N.Y. when he went through so it was at least a little cooler and less humid than down in N.C.

I'm still home so far. Haven't seen my primary care doc yet so that might change. It hurts a bit less today but I've been taking pain meds pretty regularly too. My main concern is how it effects my heart and lungs. Neither of which can stand a whole lot more. That's a bit scary. The morphine helps with the pain and the steroids keep me breathing. I'll talk to my doc about the shot that's supose to help guard against flare ups. I tried neurotonin and dropped it because of the side effects. The doc has me on Lyrica now. Trying patiently to give it a chance. After my heart attack they told me I'd be a year getting back on my feet. I did it in 5 months and hunted opening day of Deer Season. Come Archery Season, hurting or not, I'll be ready to go hunting. :)

Shootall, Swamp iritates me alright. It's kinda obvious he tries hard to anyways. Any more I just consider the source and smile. I have too many real problems to be truly concerned with him.

Thanks again everyone, for the kind words and prayers.
