Bikers survive bear attack

Biking can be dangerous.....Especially in Alaska lol!

PORTLAND, Ore. —

A mountain biker from Portland says he and his companions survived a hairy encounter with a grizzly sow and her two cubs on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula.

Kyle Eisenbach, Tyler Nord and Nord's fiancee, Kimi Elliott, were biking on the Resurrection Pass Trail on Tuesday. They pulled around a blind corner and almost ran over the three bears sunning themselves. Eisenbach told The Oregonian that the bear gashed Elliott's shoulder.

Eisenbach and Nord began screaming at the bear, which advanced on them. Nord slipped and the sow pounced, puncturing his leg with its claws.

Nord finally managed to spray the bear with bear spray and it walked off. The three bandaged themselves with a first-aid kit and drove to an Anchorage emergency room.

No surprises here.  When you play in the bears front yard you gotta expect them to be home.  Riding up on a 3 bears (Sow + cubs likely) sets the stage for a fairly predictable scenario.  Good they  were at least carrying bear spray or likely all 3 bike riders would have gotten chewed on.

On the other hand you can have a lot of encounters with bears and if you give'em some space no one is likely to get hurt.

They seemed to get off pretty lucky. Happily, the sow didn't seem all that determined to do damage.

A guy I used to work with in Vancouver,WA was cycling here in the columbia river gorge, came around a corner, DEER! Don't know what happened to set the deer off but it kicked the ever loving beejeebers out of him. Dang near ripped his ear off, folded the scalp from torn ear up over his head to the other side. He was out of work for months while he healed. It was touch and go for a few weeks. He still doesn't remember much about the onslaught. Suprising animals initiates the old fight or flight response.

Incidents like this are a weekly occurance here.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Talk about trolling, my son and some of his friends would drag on a ski rope with diving gear on looking down in up to about 130 feet of water to spot lobsters. They did this near the Keys. They would occasionaly see sharks. A bad mental picture to me. eddiegjr
