I don't really have any dream caliber/gun wishes but I'd like to see a lever in .327 magnum.

My favorite lever action is the Winchester 88 in .284w.  It is not only my dream caliber, but the caliber and rifle I have used for over 40 years.  It handles like the perfect lever action and shoots like a bolt action.

Hmn..... a Doug Turnbull 1886 in .475 Turnbull, w/a color case-hardened receiver, engraved kinda like he has on his brochure, with maybe a short-tube magazine. Of course, the stock and forearm have to sport beautiful grain. That, for me, would be the ultimate dream lever.

Hear you on that choice.......don't have the 96/357 but close to it.
I already have a Ruger 96/44 & lots of spare mags. (NOTE: the mags from the 77/44 will NOT fit the 96/44)
This is a fine, accurate rifle & you'd have to saw my arm off to get it from me.
Too bad Ruger doesn't make'em any more.
Never seen them on used racks either......the shooters who got'em keep'em.

i would like to see a 357 Sig in a lever gun.  with a nice picatinny rail for scopes.  Off topic: Would it be so hard for a big name maker to turn  out a bolt 45/70 ? A 20 or 22 inch carbine would be so good!

I like the model 1895 in .30-06, the model 88 in .308, and the model 71 in .348.  The new ammo and bullets available now make a .45/70 or .444 Marlin tough to beat.

Just the other day I was thinking about how neat it would be to have a "Lion Gun" in .405.

Jarhead,
I have an original 1895 Winchester in .405.  It is neat alright, but has to be the most uncomfortable lever to shoot of all time.  The stock is straight with a curved butt plate, and gun only weighs about 7.5 lbs.  It is great to carry but turns the shoulder black and blue with a 3 shot group.

Can you please explain to me why people seem to want pistol calibers in their dream levers?  Maybe they like to shoot paper targets all day.

I have a Winchester 1895 (built in 1900) chambered for the 405 WCF.  Mine is a rifle with the curved rifle buttplate.  With full loads it gets your attention but the purpose is to get it on paper and then quit shooting from the bench.  I also treat it as a 40-72 and load it to black powder velocities, much easier on the shoulder and you can still use the factory stuff for shooting lions!

Ppine, I think the reason for the popularity for the pistol calibers is due to the combo possibilities.  For example I just inherited an .45lc 1873 (charles daley) revolver and I immediately started thinking of an 1873 levergun.  StrawHat, your spot on about getting off the bench, especially when it comes to heavy for caliber rds.  When shooting full house 45-70's I get it close and then move on to shooting sticks to tweak it a bit.  I've seen folks with .416's and such on the bench and before they are done they are flinching, closing eyes etc.  Both you fellas are lucky to own a bonafide piece of history such as this one the original "Lion Medicine".  Someday I will have one...just not now I have to many things on the list that have a higher priority.
Oh, BTW you fellas need to post up some pics of those rifles....who knows might move mine up the want list! ;D

I have a heck of a time picking my dream caliber, pretty sure I already have it. All I know is it must come in a Marlin Guide Gun configuration.

A levergun in .357 Max, if they could make it so it would be able to shoot regular .357 Mag would be awesome.

I'm not really sure about the "Dream Caliber" business, but, for what I want to do, I couldn't be happier with my 20" Rossi M92 Carbine in .44 Magnum.

I once made a wildcat cartridge years ago 32 Xtra Special ,the cartridge was based on a 32 Special ..I had a Marlin 336 in 32 Special ..had it re-chambered to 308 Win  ..Seated the 32 cal. bullet deeper (like the 307 win) which gave me more capacity than the 32 Special ...used 307 Win loading Data ...really could not tell much difference than the 307 Win..just fired a 170 gr. .321 bullet as compared to a 170 gr .308 bullet...sold it at a gun show to a very happy camper,,,

Its hard to improve on the cartridges today ..the 338 Xpress seemed like a great concept ..but Remarlin is letting it die...

If you want fast in a Levergun you have the 308 Xpress  ,  if you want flatter shooting neck it down to .260 (6.5)

If you want fat instead of flat you have the 444 Marlin , 45/70 Gov. 450 Marlin....if you want fatter go to a 50/70 or a 500 Marlin based on the 450 Marlin

a 500 S&W lever would be nice ..16 in barrel   or Rossi start rollin out he 454 in the 92 Pumas

But a 260 (6.5) Xpress would be cool...140 gr. RN or eraser tipped bullets ..great SD  running out of barrels at velocities equal to the 6.5 X55
45/70 Government
Is the only Government
        I trust !

Just about any manufacturer and caliber would be 357 x 44 Bain and Davis. Marlin wouldn't do it so I had one made for myself, it shoots real good too.
