S&W 45 mod. 4566
« on: July 12, 2010, 03:35:39 PM »
Thinking about getting a 45, anybody have any input on them? There not DA only are they? Dont want it if they are. Any problems with the gun, I'm new to S&W autos, there revolvers are great.

The 4566 is the same basic gun as the full sized 4506 only with a shorter barrel.  The DAO version would be a 4576...a rare gun indeed.

I've owned many of the third generation S&Ws and always found them to be reliable and accurate.  I actually prefer them over other DA autos...at least the older models.

I had a model 4506-1 for a while, which is the longer barrel version of the model 4566.  I can't knock the performance of the pistol as it was always reliable and built like a T34 russian tank, but if I were you I would look for a gun with a little more refinement.  There are pistols on the market that I think handle easier and are less clunky than the Smith autos but that is just my opinion.  BTW, there weren't many holster choices available for the 4506 and the next time (if there is a next time) I buy another semi-auto I will pick the holster first and then buy the pistol that fits it!

I had a 4506 also, and it was rock solid.  I sold it to buy a new Kimber 1911.  I love the trigger in the Kimber.

The 4566 is to the 4506 as the Commander is to a Gov't model. Stellar, well-built, reliable guns, as are all 4-digit Smith autos.

Hope so I ordered one from Bud's yesterday, I have S&W revolvers and have no complaints and had a few auto's in the past and all of them have been very good guns, thanks to all for the input.
