ELECTION 2010
Is endorsing Reid on the NRA's calendar?
Rumors rampant gun organization wants Senate incumbent as lesser of 2 evils

The National Rifle Association today stood on its publicly posted announcement that it has not yet endorsed any candidate in the Nevada Senate race – pitting tea-party challenger Sharron Angle against longtime Democrat powerhouse incumbent Sen. Harry Reid.

That's as rumors are flooding the Web that the organization, which recently angered many members by withdrawing opposition to a bill that effectively will limit free speech about candidates by some groups, was ready to adopt a pro-Harry stance amid concerns that a loss by the Senate leader would move an even more antigun candidate into the leadership post.

"The list of the NRA's transgressions against its membership and the Constitution is long. Shame on me, I had been following this story at a distance. When I saw hints out there that the NRA, in its misplaced zeal for covering its own pathetic rear end, were turning their backs on a solid Reagan conservative in favor of that slimy, walking wart Harry Reid, I went ballistic," wrote a blogger at RedState.com.

Another blogger, at TheTruthAboutGuns.com, compiled a pages-long list of Reid's votes against gun rights, including one last year in which he voted against a ban on the U.N. imposing taxes on Americans after world leaders suggested a global tax on firearms.

"I'm a life member of the NRA," the blogger wrote under "Full disclosure," and, under "Full(er) disclosure," added, "That could change."

"Case in point, the idea that they might well endorse Harry Reid's re-election campaign for the U.S. Senate in Nevada. Yep. That's right. On the heels of their bailing on opposition to a bill that would effectively muzzle political dissent (except for Unions, AARP, and the NRA) simply because 'it doesn't affect them,' now comes word that Really Soon Now, the NRA plans to endorse Harry … for another term in the U.S. Senate."

According to a statement maintained on the NRA website, the endorsement policy for the NRA Political Victory Fund addresses the Nevada fight, in which Reid is facing a battle for the Senate seat with Angle.

"As always in an election year, we receive many calls and e-mails inquiring about our endorsement policy in general, and specific races in particular. That trend has certainly held up this year, as we have received many inquiries about high-profile races, such as the Nevada Senate race. For the record, NRA (Political Victory Fund) has not yet announced any ratings or endorsements in this race," the organization said, including the emphasis in its original statement.

It explains the organization is "nonpartisan" and bases its recommendations on "Second Amendment issues."

But it does note the 4-million-member group "has an incumbent-friendly policy that dictates our support for pro-gun incumbents seeking re-election. It is important that we stand with our friends who stand with us in Congress or the state legislature through their actions."

The NRA has graded Reid with a "B" this year, even though another organization, Gun Owners of America, has given him an "F."

Officials with the NRA told WND their Internet statement stood.

But the report also noted the $61 million "earmarked by Reid," for a shooting park in Arizona.

Reid is about as 2A as a mainstream politician can get. Angle is not mainstream, so she can get wayyyyyyyy out there.

nw_hunter, it is oblivious you know nothing about a single issue group.. Quit being so ignorant and take the time to learn what that means "single issue".. It is an easy concept. No endorsements will be made until September or October. But read the NRA's bi-laws, it is plain to see what they have to follow. Can the bi-laws be changed, sure they can, but until that time, they must stick to them.. Very simple.

There was no name calling, someone that is ignorant of fact is not name calling. Now had I said stupid, then yes that would of been name calling.
I was merely pointing out about there bi-laws, and if you did not know of there bi-laws, indeed you would be ignorant of the fact.

As for having conversation with me, I understand you can't handle the truth, and wish to keep your head in the sand and just blame the NRA for all things bad. You sound like the Obama administration that blames everything on Bush.. Have you done any research on your GOA leader Larry Pratt? If you like his racial background and are happy with it, then I know where you stand as well.

You are the first person to push the anti-NRA agenda here, but your following is weak. You have a handful of people that agree with you. Go back and count them, you are in the minority of people that bash the NRA here. But still you lead the charge of bashing the NRA any opportunity you get. Why not give it a rest.

Better yet, why not report how the NRA is once again fighting in Chicago for another persons rights. Where is the GOA on this one?  GOA = JOKE

Yea OK, I deal with hundreds of NRA member weekly. They have enough knowledge to understand what single issue means. Sure there are a few people that don't agree with it, but they still support the NRA as I do.  Keep thinking you have a big following of NRA bashers. You are a small minority, and nothing more.

you and i both know that only a fraction of gun owners are nra members.   it couldnt be that most people dont like the nra, could it?  i will tell ya, whenever i go to a sport show, or some other event where they have a booth set up for panhandling, i always feel like i have dog turds stuck to the bottom of my shoe.  and you know what?  i see everyone else is outright REPULSED by the panhandlers.
i know folks like you work hard and believe in what you do.    the sad reality is scumbags like la pierre and the other bloodsuckers are just leeching off of your passion and hard work; all the while selling out the american gun owner and lining their pockets in the process.   it makes me sad.

Your wasting your time trying to talk sense to him MM......He can't see past his prejudices!

He's confusing the word (bashing) with (enlightening) He should be infuriated with the leadership at the NRA, and as a member be calling for their heads to roll.He picks a group out like the GOA, and calls them names, as he lets the NRA take credit for their hard work.

He sounds like he might be trying to secure a place at the trough.........If you know what I mean!

The NRA.......Like the Republican party is being taken over by Liberals, and I don't see that pattern changing with what I'm hearing from people that make excuses for them.

If you can't fix something, then it's best to toss it and get a new one. The NRA and the GOP might not be worth the repair bill. "Just my humble opinion" I'm sure some will disagree ;D

Any person or group who says they support the Second Amendment but willingly sells out the First Amendment is STUPID in the extreme. They are just too tightly interwoven to support one without the other. That the NRA doesn't see that shows they just plain are NOT on the side of Americans in general or gun owners in particular.

Once the first goes so goes the second and vice versa. Ya can't have either without the other and the NRA just sold out the First for personal gain of the leadership while in turn harming the membership and all Americans.

The best thing that could happen to the US and to gunowners is for the NRA to go out of business.

+1

You can follow the decline in pro gun leadership over the years in the NRA, with just some simple research online.

Here is just one example

Neal Knox
Gun writer, board member and officer of the National Rifle Association, career gun rights activist, and prolific author of articles related to his interpretation of the 2nd Amendment and views on firearms laws.

In 1978 Knox moved to Washington D.C. in order to lobby against gun control measures, and work for the National Rifle Association. He would go on to serve four years as the Executive Director of the Institute for Legislative Action, which is the lobbying arm of the NRA. At NRA, Knox was instrumental in convincing friendly lawmakers to introduce a reform of the 1968 Gun Control Act. The bill became the Firearm Owners Protection Act, which eventually passed in 1986.

One of the recurring themes throughout Knox's career was his uncompromising stance on gun laws and the 2nd Amendment, which he believed recognizes a pre-existing human right to self-defense. His views would lead him into Many confrontations with other members of the NRA leadership and Congressional leadership. In 1997 a narrowly divided NRA Board voted Knox out of the succession line for President of the NRA replacing him with Charlton Heston, who was subsequently elected President of the organization.

The leadership at the NRA doesn't even closely resemble people like him, and truth is............It never will!

i dont believe redhawk is one of the bloodsuckers; or trying to be one.  i know he works hard at what he does and believes in it.
the sad part is they scumbags selling us out are feeding and growing rich off guys like redhawk that they have hoodwinked.  there is no doubt in my mind redhawk has the best of intentions.  but, it is like telling a man that his wife is cheating on him.   99 times out of 100 they are going to look at you and not believe you, it is just too unbelievable; even though everyone in town has witnessed it.   they will convince themselves that it JUST CANT BE.

I think the NRA needs to get back to the Charter of the NRA and stop all the lobbying that just leads to more fund raising and more lobbying! and so on.
If you donate $10 they will send you $30 of Direct mailing asking for more $.
If they made it possible for schools to have shooting teams, and teach people how to shoot it would do our cause a whole lot more than trying to get some moron senator with his hand out to hopefully vote for ar against some stupid idea of some other bugger eationg moron senator.

myronman, I am not blind nor am I being hoodwinked. I sure as heck am not stupid nor ignorant of what all they do. I have said many times, I don't like everything the NRA does. As of yet no one has come up with a better alternative. The GOA, The National Association for Gun Rights, and a few others talk big, but really are not the answer to the problem.

There are a few busy trying to discredit the NRA every chance they get. Do any of you know how many battles the NRA are fighting as we speak, literally hundreds if not thousands.

I am a lobbyist for our 9-12 group, I see what happens in legislative hall. When the Liberal Democraps want to push an agenda, they will attach an anti-gun bill to it, if the bill passes, the amendment passes as well. This is a daily battle. If the NRA did not have the lobbyist in place, so many bills would have pass without a fight or awareness of the general public.

I am not in with the NRA, I am a member, but I do more than sit back and bash them. I do have connections deep within the NRA, and I let then know how the members feel on what the NRA does. With hope of making some changes for the betterment of the NRA. Sitting back and bashing them in not going to further your cause, and surly abounding them is not either.

Don't blame the NRA for the schools not having shooing programs, it is the Liberal progressives that have changed the schools systems that are the blame, and the everyday citizens that elect the Liberal school board members. Look in the mirror, how many school board elections have you gone to? It is so easy to sit back and complain, sad very sad.....

The NRA sponsors many shooting programs, I think you need to do a little research. As for the lobbyists, read my above post.

That may be, and Lobbying may be needed to steer the stupid into not doing really stupid things.
But it really chaps me when you send 10, 25 or 50 bucks to them for some cause or another and the more you send the more junk mail you recieve asking for more money.  I used to sell direct mail, i know what it costs and I wonder if the heads of the NRA are the ones that own a printing house.
Send me two requests a year, not two a month for every $10 I send in.
Sends me the message we need money cause we spend it on trying to get more from you.
What I would like to see the NRA do is go after the people that write the bills, sue them for civil rights, personally!  If they write a bad law that is un constitiutional why are they not imprisoned?  Why can we not sue them for violating our civil rights?  NRA class action Suit.  All 30 Million Members going after one congressman for civil rights violations.  No one will write another stupid law again.  And yes they may have immunity but they will have to spend a boat load to defend them selves.

I suspect that the NRA would better served by a leader with a less homosexual sounding name than Wayne LaPierre.

$1 million/year. Guess I know why Wayne does it.

Lifetime members are responsible for fundraising
« Reply #20 on: July 13, 2010, 04:51:12 PM »
OK, let us say that you have a membership driven organization. Do you want annual memberships or lifetime ones?

Lifetime is good short term. You get a lot of money upfront. You can choose to invest it and live off the returns, like any smart trust fund kid would. Or you can burn through it. Putting yourself (you the CEO) in a scenario where you need to provide services to members that are not providing matching recurring revenue. Unless you can generate a steady stream of lifetime memberships to float the expenses associated with older lifetime members (Google pyramid scheme), you will need to get those old life members to send you more money. Hit them up for donations, sell them made in China logo items, whatever.

Annual is harder, but probably more fiscally responsible.
