Just a note but Ed's Coehorn won the Floyd mortar shoot and one of his Boat Howitzers was the Grand Prize.

  Speaks well for his product.

OK everyboby take a deep breath and relax . I am not insulted . I do take  seriously customer satisfaction . Unhappy people don't buy again .
DD , I would like to work cheaper , but I have a couple of bad habits to support , eating and sleeping under a roof . I am glad to hear one of my mortars placed so highly . Good shooting . The Grand prize is a "one off" modification of a Sawyer . Come on guys let's get back to the smoke & thunder !! Armorer77

Yeah, smoke and fire!!!!!

Ed, because you want to eat and sleep under a roof, I have to go get a job to so I can buy this one.

Hey, maybe I could send SantaWife some hints for the upcoming holiday.  I need to plan my strategy.

Ed what do you call this cannon.

I sent my wife a hint via email titled Christmas in July... she loves it when I send her email...she knows I am up to something.
Here's what I sent.

"Since you always enjoy watching QVC’s Christmas In July, I thought I would share the link with you Christmas in July.   Santa’s boat howitzer is particularly nice and would look lovely under our tree. "

Be sure to click on the link.

Ok here's pics...the barrel first, the split trail carriage in construction second.  The cross piece under the trail is only for my visualization of an axle tree.  Everything is oak; hardware will be stripped and blackened.  I am buying trunnion straps from Armorer 77 to match.  The pics will come when I do something significant.  18 1/2 inch by 1.5 wooden wheels planned. Thanks for looking.  Jeff G

If Santa wife takes the hint, I think I will do a Marsilly carriage, you could change my mind.

How much does that puppy weigh?  My wife has been hinting (loudly) that she needs her own cannon and that one might be just the ticket- GB caliber right?

By the way, once I cut my trunnion notches in the trail, I realize I can control barrel movement very easily with friction in the trunnion caps.  8)

Ok, update!  I added some of the iron furniture to the trail cheeks. I made a concession and used hex headed lag bolts.  I will sand off the letters on the bolt heads, and everything will be black.  The wood will be a grey-blue.
I recieved my wheels, 18.5x1.5 wide. The crossbeam is the piece of wood that will utimately become my axle tree.

Thanks for looking, JeffG

JeffG,
What are you going to use for a barrel leveling devise?
I used a threaded rod for mine.  Where did you get the wheels?

The trunnion irons should be continuous from front to rear so the recoil is applied to the front of the cheeks instead of the rear of the trunnion notch.

What size square head lag screws do you need?  Hardware source  or Blacksmith Depot

Here's where the wheels came from:http://www.accentsofcountry.com/wagonwheels

I am thinking of re-doing the trunnion irons...and the lags, thanks for the comments.

The leveller is going to be hand fabricated, and attatched to a ring below the cascabel.

JeffG,
You could use the cap squares you have for trunnion plate sockets. Cut the cap squares to fit your plates, weld, then fit the plates to the cheek pieces. Then buy another set of cap squares with longer arms to fit the existing bolt holes.

That is going to be a very good looking gun when you are finshed, nice work.

It looks like you've got a good start on a classic 'double bracket' carriage, Jeff. Please keep posting pics of your progress.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

That second version was well orchestrated to Carmina Burana.

Am I having vision problems? The picture of the pyramid head lag bolts mentioned by DoubleD looks to me like they are threaded left handed.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

Perhaps they took the picture with the screw resting the other way, but thought it looked better when flipped horizontally, so they did that without realizing it would flip the threads as well.

Then again...that's too logical.  Perhaps they just want to be different, which is why they offer these in the first place.

Could be.  I have encountered bolts with "threads" that were parallel ridges.  The flipped pic looks like right hand threads.
