Requires a Gator Grip socket or 1/2" open end wrench to install.

Carriage update... after getting some time to work on this I have done the following:  I got the cap squares that I had turned around and the irons welded. (great idea by the way.) New ones coming from Ed at HMR.

I got a supply of square head lags from Hardware Source. I found a 1 inch axle at our local steel yard and promptly broke all my 1/4 inch bits drilling the ends ???...must have had a lot of chromium content.

I pretty much have everything painted, I will have to touch up the blue where Ol' Numbthumb ran off the lines! ::)

I had a nut welded onto my barrel under the cascabel, that I shaped into a ring.  Part of my elevating device is 3/8 threaded rod.  I had a nut welded on the top of that too, and shaped it into a ring, to attatch to the barrel with a bolt and nut.

Here are pics of the carriage in the rough, I will post some more, and of the elevating screw later, it's kinda late tonight.  Thanks for looking! Jeff G

The left-hand thread versions are the high-security type.   ;D

JeffG,
How are attaching the two rails to the axle housing?  For additional strength, I think you should cut into the rails at least an inch so they fit over the axle housing.
In this picture you can see that I cut into the cheeks and also into the axle housing.  The iron piece that wraps around the axle tree is seperate from trunnion iron that wraps the cheeks.  The capsquare bolts go through the cheeks from top to bottom and secure everything together.  It is very strong.

I through-bolted the box to the cheeks, I will "iron them in" a little later.

It's looking better and better Jeff; I think that you nailed the blue shade that the Continental Army used to paint their arty carriages with in order to pay respect to their French allies.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Got 'er done!  I finished up the elevation device.  I made it out of threaded rod with a ring under the cascabel.  The rest of it is 3/8 iron pipe and flange.  It works pretty good.  The rest are photos we took today.  Thanks for looking!  JeffG

I've had this happen a few times with cannons we have made. I call them nose divers
