Over sized Model 10
« on: July 13, 2010, 07:56:48 PM »
I went to the gun shop today.
Just poking around to see if anything catches my eye in the used bin.
The guy asked what I was looking for and said not thing in particular maybe a M67, M66, M640 ... and said Meer (that I guess is Russian -English for Come here)
Handed me a model 22.  Looked like an over sized Model 10 classic with the small grips.  only in 45 Colt.
Really liked the gun.  Felt good in my hand.
Some one talk me out of spending the $900.
Please.

Here is the only thing.
I own a Model 10 4", M28 4", M 686 Sill 6", M 29 6", No 3 5" and a Colt (am I allowed to say this on the S&W site?) 1917 5"
Not sure I need the M22 it is more of a want and the same $900 (not including all the other stuff to go with the gun like leather tax and title) could be used for Reloading dies, ammo, shooting events, hunting trips, camping gear.
Some one please tell me not to.

New problem.
Snuck into the other gun shop and Frank (the guy the Myth busters go to, has been on the show a few times) has a Crisp M17 6" with target stocks, Hammer and Trigger for $500.
Older Blued 6 shot.
Do I trade in My Ruger 22 Bisley and the Colt 1917 and get both?

Good purchase.  One of the best loads in the 45 Auto Rim is with the Keith style 452423 slug over anywhere from 6.5-6.8 gns of Unique - gets ya 950-980'/sec.   The M17s have class.

Mikey, M17 not 1917 or that's the way I read it.

Yes the little 22LR .
I have a 1917 and the load will come in handy if i ever get any of the Auto Rim cases.
The M22 in the Shop was 45 Colt I think.  The gap between the cylinder and the frame did not look large enough for 45 ACP with full or 1/2 Moon clips.
My 45 Colt (No3 Schofield) almost closes with the full moon clips with 45 ACP.
I was thinking of having the cylinder shaved to take them and get rid of shooting the 45 Colt that do not eject and the 45 Schofield that are really expensive and do eject.
I guess if it was in 44 Special I would have forked over the $

Snagging the K-22 was a far better deal than the M-22. Talk about a CLASSIC Smith & Wesson!

What surprises me today are the people who will pay $800-$900 for a current S&W revolver...that is basically a COPY of a past model.  Like a M-29 with MIM parts, lousy finish, grips that are similar but not really Targets, etc.    Yet for the same money you could with a little looking and some knowledge...get an original gun form the 70's or early 80's.

Can you tell I collecct  the older Smith revolvers??

Just a few years ago I found a 1980s vintage 6" S&W 44 special lnib with all the paperwork & other stuff for $500.   I wouldn't pay anywhere near $900. for that gun.

I wasn't impressed after shooting it & traded it to a friend for a different S&W.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

I too like the 50's through 80's Smiths with the pin on the hammer.
I do not like the looks of the new smiths with the internal pin.  I think they look like a taurus.
But as some point the guys after us will be talking about the internal classic pin guns that were made in the late 90's to early 20?0's and and how they do not like the new (what ever comes next versions) and how they would never pay 1,800 for the new ones but would pay the 900 for the classic internal pin models.
I will be up your way this fall.  hunting in Mt.  (I know it's a big state)  We are hoping to be in and around the bear tooth.  my buddy got drawn for a combo hunt.  I did not.
but was thinking of a shorter handier 44 and was suprised to see that the new M629 was less than $110 more than the Classic M22.
How can the stainless gun with adjustable sights be only $110 more with all the materials and the extra fitting and cutting for the adjustable sights?
Oh well unless I can find a used M629 4" the 6" 29 will be going
