Does anyone have experience with Cannonmikes?
« on: July 14, 2010, 03:43:54 PM »
I am interested in on elf his 1/2 scale 1841 barrels.  I did a search and come up with nothing.  Does anyone have any experience with his products or photos to share?  Any other recommendations on similar sized barrels?  I should have gotten one of Dom's parrotts last year, but decided ro start small and bought a Brooks 24 pounder which is awesome. Now its's time to go bigger.

I've got one of his 1780-1800 Spanish swivel guns. Bore size is 1 1/4". Great little gun.
Cannonmike is a great person to do business with.
I also got a rear sight from him. The sight sits in the fuse hole and can be raised or lowered real easy. It's a peep arangement.
Here is his email addy:   cannonmike<cannonmike@qwest.net>

Thanks guys. Just had a few thoughts.....what's the best way to finish a steel barrel?  I was thinking some type of paint.  Probably an epoxy would be best????  Of course I cooed have it blued if i can find someone to do it for me.  Bluing would also slow any oxidation inside the bore so might not be a bad option.  Anyone have any input?

Paint works just fine.   My Cairo  gun is made with 4140 and was painted  using rustoleum barbecue paint back in the mid 80's.  I refinished it last year and found no corrosion.  One thing I did do before painting was to use a good primer.

I had no issues over that period of time with corrosion.  The gun is always clean with the cgarden house after every shooting session, then dried and oiled with NAPA ATF 5.

For bluing you are going to need to find a metal finisher-plater who does black oxide work.  CM barrels are large enough that they won't fit in most gunsmith bluing tanks.

There was a popular paint that people on here were using (one of those super durable types), and I had a link to it on a supplier's site, but the link is dead and buried or deleted, and I don't remember what the stuff is called.  I'm considering options for my Hern barrel, so I'm also interested in seeing other people's recommendations (though bluing isn't the route I'd go for mine).

The barbecue paint sounds like a good idea.  I am in the coal region of PA so there is the option Rocklock mentioned, but that sounds a bit messy :).

Zulu,

Way interesting! I have had some positive experience with powder coating on marine engine blocks. How did it work on BP barrels?

Michael,
On this particular barrel, it was a glossy finish, it was chip resistant, scratch resistant, and very easy to clean up.  I always had a problem with paint chipping of on the muzzel face of my Parrott rifle.  This gun didn't seem to have the problem.

Seems like a couple of years ago someone used POR-15. It is super hard stuff, doesn't chip, rustproof paint.
It's not cheap; but, it protects.

My 1841 should arrive this coming monday. $125. for shipping to VA.  Mike is of few words, but great to deal with. He makes nice molds as well. Theres a real dearth of good 1/2 scales barrels out there.

Alright now I'm getting excited ;D. I emailed Mike earlier this week and he won't be producing any barrels until October.  I guess I'll be spending my winter building the carriage.    Hehehehehehe

That's the stuff I was thinking of.  I don't know how good it is, but it seems like a decent option.  I'm also thinking about brake caliper paint.

Brake caliper paint sounds like it would be a good option.  Should withstand high heat etc without chipping etc, probably the same as BBQ paint. Most caliper paints I have seen are brush on.  The spray on BBQ paint might give a better finish sans brushstrokes.  I've never used BBQ paint.  Is it a matte finish?  The caliper paints are usually gloss or semi-gloss which would probably look better than matte.

VA R.

Post he pictures, we want to see!!!

Sent Rob the pics I received from Cannon Mike.

Next week, I'll post some of the barrel in it's new home. I mounted it in an naval carriage that had to be narrowed 3/4" and the trunion pockets enlarged from 1.5" to 1.75". Angled cheeks, so had to be careful.  Thought it came out very nice. It's the living room cannon. Don't know if any 6 lb barrels ever found their way to a naval mount. Perhaps on the western rivers or maybe the rebs as they were like us in the Corps. "Improvise, Adapt and Overcome".

In the process, I stumbled on one of your guys secrets. Cannon builds / work is a great excuse to buy shop gear!

It is possible, however, to have too much fun.  For example the fellow at work who pulled a muscle in his back from laughing too hard.

Got your pictures.  Thanks!  Can't wait to see the full build you did!  I'll buy wheels.....I don't have the skills or tools to build my own.  I'll probably buy a band saw for field carriage building.  What size should I get?  Fortunatley I live right by a Grizzly tool showroom  :)

I was thinking about this one

That's probably OK although you might consider getting the riser block kit for it too.
