Stevens 200/Hornaday 40gn. Vmax.223
« on: July 14, 2010, 06:48:21 PM »
Well I got my Stevens 200 out to the range finaly, broke it in with Umc 55gn.FMJs,  After a good cleaning I shot Hornaday 55gn.Vmax,it shot alot better (.650).   The Q is how well do you think Hornaday 40gn. Vmax will shoot???  What with it having a 1-9 twist.  Wanting to vaporise some crows!     Thanks Jeff  :)

The only way to know the answer to your question is to try them.Either your rifle will like them or it won't.
No reason they shouldn't shoot well.

I never tried the 40's, but I have the same rifle, and it LOVES the 50 gr vmaxes. When I "found" it's load, I stopped load development and just started making ammo. It definitely would do a number on a crow, or a 'yote, or a rabbit, or prairie dog. Mine will shoot the 50's into the .4's, so I'm "done" with that one.

I have the exact same rifle,,I handload 55gr v-max and h335(23.5 gr),2884fps,with exceptional accurracy,,,dropped a yote no problem at 200+yards last fall.
I just recently did some load development with the 40gr v-max,and h335 ,27.7gr),also with exceptional accuracy,,haven't chrony'ed them yet,,or hunted with them yet,I suspect they are around 3600fps

Well Tuesday got to the Range.  Rifle sighted 1" high @100 W/55gn.Vmax.  Put 3 Hornaday 40gn. Vmax downrange and I can't believe it,But all three you could cover with a Dime.  POI was the same as the 55gn.  Can't wait to shoot a crow.   Thanks Jeff  :) :) :)

Nice group!

I'll have to try some of those in my .223 :)
Romans 3:23  "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Romans 6:23a  "...The wages of sin is death..."
Romans 6:23b  "...But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Romans 5:8,  "God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us!"
Romans 10:13  "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord  will be saved!"
Romans 10:9"...If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you shall be saved.."

Fiocchi 40 grain V-Max are cheap, frequently on sale at Cabelas for under $10 per box of twenty and shoots nearly as good as any handload in both of my 223's. That would be a cheap way to find out.
