Best Crossbow ever
« on: July 16, 2010, 03:21:03 AM »
I have never own a crossbow before and am interested in buying one.  I have never even shot a crossbow at a deer before.  The other day, I was in Dicks and decided to go and look at there crossbow for the heck of it.  When I got back there, I saw that they had a Horton HD 175 crossbow with complete package and all.  The original price was 500 bucks but it is on sale for 350 bucks.

Now, it looks like an awesome crossbow, however, I have no idea of how good Horton crossbows really are.  Is this a good crossbow?  Are hortons good crossbows?  Should I be looking at other crossbow brands like Parker, PSE and Barnett?  Like I said, I have never own a crossbow before, so I have a lot of learning to do.  I do not want to spend more than 400 bucks on a crossbow.  Any opinion that you have on crossbows whether it's a simple thing or not, it will be greatly appreciated.

you get what you pay for. and barnetts are the bottom of the barrel with quilaty and customer service.

Before you buy any one brand  go out and shoot several first.
Look at the features of each bow and decide what will work best for your needs and wants..

Look at a crossbow like a truck, a 2 door S10 is a truck but it isnt in the same class as a Ford F350 supercrew.

I have a Barnett Revolution AVI and its very accurate and the customer service is great. They have taken care of or answered all my concerns. They now have a 5 year warranty and for the price are some of the flatest shooting. They have come along way from what some think of the old Barnett.

I had a bad experience with a certain brand once so I tried a new Horton and didn't like the ergonomics at all. The store owner convinced me to try a Ten Point. I hate him for it! WARNING! do not look at a Ten Point! It's a lot more money than you are looking to spend but nothing else felt right after that. I've been shooting it for about 6 years now and can't brag about it enough.

got a ten point gt flex last week, it is one of their cheaper models. kind of the worst of the best I guess  ;D. Anyway at 20 yards you better not shoot 2 arrows at the same bullseye without pulling the first one out unless you wanna buy a bunch of extra arrows.
Thanks,

My expereince too, Okie. I'm not a real archery fanatic like many are. I only do it to get those extra 5 weeks in the Florida woods. Between heat, skeeters and snakes it just ain't fun. I have no biz owning such a nice crossbow but it sure makes me loook like an expert. It won't miss.

I have a barnett predator sweet shooting and very accurate.  I have friends who have barnett older models and they shoot well also.  Some people think you have to pay $1,000 for crossbow to shoot well.   Same with bows some think you have to have a matthews or the newist bow made.  I have a myles keller I baught in 80's and it shoots well and has killed many a deer.

you are right you do not need to spend a grand on a crossbow, but you need to look at a lot of things when getting one

Look at customer service
look where it is made would you reather support companies in the usa or china (now I know it is imposable to get anything made 100% in us but some companies  keep as much as the can in the states)
Look at features you need and want

There a lot of facters that come into play other then just price.

I bought a tenpoint for a few reasons
first they have the accudraw that attaches to the bow  and I only have to carry a small wrench with me others you have to attache the cocking device to teh bow before you use it or need a rope cocker, both would not work for me.
I did some research and found they had the best customer service and if something happens I am sending the bow back to the factory in the United states not to a dealer ot shipping it out of the country.

I have owned 3 Horton crossbows and a 10 point. I now own a Parker Cyclone, made in the good old USA right in Virginia... Love the Parker. It all comes down to what fits you best and what you want your bow to look like. They are all well made crossbows.

A friend of mine that's a long time longbow hunter has recently had to look at Xbows, due to a shoulder problem.  We tried some bows at GM and he fell in love with the 10 pt also, expensive but shoots like a rifle with the best trigger of some 6 bows that we tried.  As said above don't aim at the same spot twice, unless you want to destroy arrows with one.

I've got a Barnett qaud 400 it is impossible to hit 3 arrows inside a 20yd bull, with scope. It has been sent back under warranty 3 times for it. Keeps coming back claiming there is nothing wrong with it. It is also extremly load. I would never own another.

I thought my Parker Cyclone was nice. I bought an Excalibur Vortex, and it is now the crossbow that I doubt anyone could build better.  It is just an awesome crossbow.  Sold my Parker to a buddy.  ;D

I bought an Excalibur Exocet last year.  Absolutely love it.  Accurate, don't have to fire an arrow to unload it after hunting etc.... second to none.

I've settled on TenPoint. I have an older model that had been retrofitted and tuned with newer (2009) limbs, cables, and string. I topped it with a BushnellŪ Trophy Multi-Reticle Red Dot Scope. I am using TenPoint aluminum bolts and MUZZY 125 grain triple blade heads. I bought an Excalibur rope cocking aid from Cabelas, makes all the difference in the world for ease of cocking the crossbow. It is a great shooting crossbow. TenPoint makes a fine product.

As far as how good is a Horton?  Well, I loaned my Super Mag (mid-90's) to my cousin once.  After he was done, he leaned it against the rear truck tire and forgot about it.  Of course, he ran over one of the limbs!  Never had a bit of trouble with it afterwards.  They are pretty much industrctible but very loud tho.

I have killed a bunch of deer with my Barnett Wildcat C5, it is really quiet, accurate and have recieved excellent CS the 2 times I have had to use it.  Great entry level package.

Go ahead and buy the Horton.  You'll like it, and it's within in your budget (unlike the Parkers and Excaliburs that everyone wants to write about - guys he did say he didn't want to spend more than $400).  I have the Summit and it shoots great, but then again pretty much any crossbow will shoot well IF you cock it properly and know how to shoot.  The important thing is to have good arrows, properly spined (although the spine is less important than it is with a bow, due to little or no paradox).  After all, a crossbow is just a launching device (no barrel to speak of).  Human error is where the lack of accuracy comes from (failure to cock the string in the same location is the most likely culprit, or loose sights, bad arrows or just not being able to shoot well).  As for noise, all crossbows are fairly loud (some more than others), but you can buy accessories to dampen the vibration (noise).  Good luck and enjoy.

I've had a Horton for a long time and it works great, but not having to fire an arrow to unload caught my eye.  How about expaning on this.  Do you just remove the bolt (arrow) and pull the trigger?  My daughter was in Africa and took a huge blesbok with an Excaliber.  It is a possible record with a crossbow.
