Here's the hint -  this got started when Lance kept bugging me to go shooin'. (Which I do far too little of.)  I just picked a name out of the air and we found a place through friends and then we've just repeated it.  You too can host a shoot!

It was indeed at least a major theme.  Lance chose to hold his own shoot (because I couldn't make the imposition on our range host if he did show up).  We're still waiting for Lance to report how his shoot went.

It looks like you put on a great shoot.  The smiles tell it all. I know there is a good deal of work that goes in to putting on one of these.  I also know the past week has been particularly tough for you.  Congratulations on job well done.

Lance is lucky, as he has a friend like you, so he will come around.  He may not realize it, but he has a lot friends here on the board also. We don't always agree, because we are each individuals view life differently.  But we are all still friends.   

I may not agree with everyone here, but I can't think of anyone I wouldn't enjoy meeting, and that includes Lance.  So many minds with some great ideas and wonderful skills. There hasn't been a soul here I couldn't learn from, new to the hobby and the old salts, all included.  I am always willing to share what little knowledge I have, and am so grateful for the knowledge others share.  The creativity and artistry displayed here is incredible and Lance is one of those artisans. He is missed.

Host a shoot?  Houston has no hills.  About the only thing you could use as a backstop around here is a highway overpass embankment.
I have never shot anything out of a cannon in spite of burning around 500 pounds of powder in my life.
It looks like it would be fun.

I re-enacted for a really long time with my 10 Pounder Parrott rifle shooting only blanks.  I ordered 50 lbs of powder at a time and UPS delivered it to my front porch.
We had to shoot blanks.  The authorities really frown on slaughtering Yankees for the viewing pleasure of the public.
I sold my Parrott but I still have this.  1 1/2"bore South Bend barrel on my carriage.  It too has only shot blanks.

OK, a little bit bigger than a pop can bore, but I was close.

I'm glad you recognized his presence there by his cannon and not his legs.      
And correct, my pop-can bore morter (which is bright-chromed) stayed at home this time.

You know Cat, now that you mention it, his legs are kind of attractive, but nowhere near as cute as your mutton chops.

The Pulaski Mariners won again last night against the Danville Braves:  8:7.  Good game.  12 innings.

So, I was so late getting back last night even the cats wanted to come in (and not play outside).

Let me emphasize again the gernerosity here of our host, Dennis, of Richard (the generous) (thelionspaw) for donating the soon-to-be awarded prizes (as soon as I get one more mailing address), of Bruce (VA rifleman) (for donating a new 19" sawyer type GB barrel made by Armorer 77 "Ed Hart"), of Pete (Little Seacoast) for winning it and identifying that it should go to someone without a cannon, and for each of our wives for supporting our habbit and putting up with us.

This is what really made the shoot special!  Of note is that the folks here are no different than y'all.

According to Tim's ID-ing efforts on Reply #16, that would be VA rifleman/Bruce pulling the lanyard on the SBR Dahlgren in the photo posted on Reply #22.

I'm now waiting on delivery of one of these from South Bend Replica, (now updated to a possible 30-60 day wait  ) which is why I'm interested in this gun.

I like that slap-hammer size because it doesn't look way to large like a lot of these things do when attached to a sub scale model.

So a few questions for VA rifleman: Did this smaller/lighter hammer function well in firing the cap?
I noticed in the photo that the whole cannon was pulled to the side in firing; did you have to use that amount of force, or did you eventually get the cannon to fire using a lighter pull that didn't move the whole gun?

Pete; weren't you supposed to be giving that Dahlgren to a friend?   I guess you just wanted to make sure it functioned properly before you turned it over.

Whatever the case may be, I'd appreciate getting the lowdown on how good/poorly that slaphammer worked with the barrel.

Hiya BoomJ, Yeah I bought that one for a friend but he may play hell getting it until a Dom GB size becomes available.  The little slaphammer actually works well with a cap, the tendency is to use more force than needed.  The carriage sometimes recoils a little to one side instead of straight.  Gun shoots very straight with 250gr of F and a lead 0.982 ball, VA Rifleman is a good shot and put one through Will's crown @100 yds. (Will is an apple tree named by CW as in "fire at Will"). Sorry to miss you, hope the leg is doing better now. Regards, Pete

Boomj, Here are a few pics of the ignition assembly.  I have the impression that this is a SBR accessory but no way to prove or disprove it. Supposedly the original 9" guns came with two vents predrilled in offset location like on this model.  Sorry about the leg mixup, the idea that anyone was looking at my legs kind of threw me off center there.

LS, I don't know if that hammer was made by SBR, it's not in their catalog; but I'll find out, because I'm sure that I'll be talking to the owner at least a few more times before I get my gun.

I think the barrel movement when pulling the lanyard was poor skill on my part. It needs a snappy, short duration jerk and not a hard, longer duration pull. No problems at all with ignition.  Thanks to Pete for letting me shoot! It's a real pretty piece and his big GB mortar is exceptional as well.

Watching Tim launch soda bottles from his mortars was very educational! Never would have guessed they would survive the charge intact. Tim could get a 2nd job delivering drinks to the nose bleed section at a football stadium!
Blasted, but not shaken nor stirred...

Tim almost won the Ed Hart Barrel. His practice shot landed just behind the looming fortification (Will) but we never could find his record shot. Thought I heard something on the news about a new object found in low earth orbit.


HAD A WONDERFULL TIME!!!   A great place to shoot and even better people!
