Model 10 problem
« on: July 17, 2010, 11:49:00 PM »
I took my 10 out this week and put about 50 rounds through it. It shot perfectly as it always does. However, when I was cleaning it I noticed the cylinder was hard to get open. I really had to pop the backside of the cylinder to get it to come open, and it didn't always open on the first whack. When closed, it turns and functions like it should. It doesn't seem to bind on anything. What is wrong with my poor little 10?

Dirty? Could be your primers are backing out, causing binding.  Is the crane lubed, not damaged?

The ejector rod may have come unscrewed a little. A little crud might be in the end of the ejector rod where it engages the plunger. Something binding the button causing it not to go all the way forward to release the crane, possibly on the inside. Could be some grit around the plunger binding it on the inside of the cylinder. If the crane swings freely in and out I look to the plunger system that locks it up in the frame. Sometimes a good cleaning by removing the crane and cylinder and removing the ejector rod and cleaning it and the springs, the center hole in the cylinder and everything to do with the plunger/lockup parts will fix it. Swing the cylinder out and look to see if the pin in the frame is flush with the frame so it will release the cylinder. It's happened to me that a piece of lint from a cleaning rag in the wrong place bound up one of my wheelguns. Once I took one apart and put it back together and it worked fine, not sure why.

With an S&W hard opening is usually caused by the ejector rod coming unscrewed a little bit.

It could also be one of the other problems mentioned above, but I would check that first.
