Steyr m95

Just picked up a Steyr m95 at Big 5 today. Seems they close them out for 99 bucks and most were out but a few had some,mostly in bad condition. I found a good one though in really nice shape. The stock has a few more dings and dents than Id like,but the bluing is in great shape and the bore is really nice. Now I just need to find reloading supplies and order some ammo clips.  .329 bullets seem to the hard one to find. I think I know where I can get some brass and my first thought is to get a .329 bullet sizer die from lee and swage .338s down. I think lee ma a 8x56R dies set,but I dont know if they are available anymore.

These rifles are fascinating imo.

They are spendy here, 299

 Seems like 99 was a heck of deal then. I cant imagine that the clips could be that hard to find on the internet?

 I took a look,it looks like the prices range from 5-15 dollars which I don't consider bad at all. Im really stoked about this purchase. I just cleaned the cosmolene out of the bore and its sweet. The finish is good all over,but clearly was redone as there is some very minor rust pitting on the left side of the receiver visible under the finish. The stock also has a good finish,but again had the finish redone. I cant wait for my dies,brass and bullets to come so I can take it out and shoot it. Ill have to get an order out for clips tomorrow.

These were 8x50 first and upgraded in the 30's to 8x56r. (Steyr Mannlicher M95's)  I think sportsmans guide had some surplus ammo.  Its nazi marked.  I think these were still offered at Century arms.

Recoil is interesting ;)
Much of the Nazi marked ammo used to come
in clips. I had several dozen but they are packed up
somewhere. I will look around this weekend and see if I
can scrounge a couple up for you.

Sorry i got my clip from numrich gun parts.  I never shot mine yet and i wonder if grafs has the brass?

I been waiting for Prvi-Partizan to offer more military calibers and also more grafs brass too.  I been mainly waiting for the 7,62x45 czech brass and ammo.  I think aim surplus may have new 8x56r ammo.

 Ive heard that as well,however I can order 8x56R brass for about 60 dollars for 100,and I pay about 48 dollars for 100 7.62x54R so for the 12 dollars extra,I might as well buy some. The interesting thing is,Grafs lists Berdan "large rifle" primers in their catalog. Apparently Tula is making them for a damn good price at that. I'm going to call them tomorrow and find out exactly which they are. I wonder if I might be able to scrounge up some "worthless" Berdan primed brass. They list the 8x56R brass as out of stock though.

 The guy at the place I buy my reloading supplies tells me that he used to to it with a wooden dowel and water. Said it was a pain compared to boxer,but it worked. Everyone has been telling me though that berdan primers are "impossible to get" and until now,my searches have confirmed that. In fact,even though they are listed in the catalog,I still have to call and ask them before I will be convinced its not a typo or limited supply type of thing.

8x56R it says, must be the same. Hornady brass would be boxer primed and easily reloadable.

 THat comes to something like 1.30 a cartridge though. I would prefer to just buy the brass. Ill probably get a Lee bullet mold and cast them. I think Ill also get a .329 bullet sizing die and try swaging some .338s down. The die only costs about 10 or 15 dollars.

Yes kinda spendy. Maybe not, by todays standards. And you would have the brass to reload. I know of no other source for boxer brass for this cartridge. If I get one of these rifles, this is the route I would go.

These are M95 Styer Mannlicher rifles in 8x56r..... ::)

I think the straight bolt is awesome.  I'm not sure how they handle? Recoil?  Power?

Graffs lists boxer brass and Ive seen some on auction sites for about what Graffs wants. Graffs lists it as sold out now. Im planning on going to the auction sights,but if that doesn't work out as planned Ill just use 7.62x54R as that is easily available to me.

 It looks like Im set. Buffalo Arms lists 8x56R brass on their website for $56 for 100. Thats a perfectly acceptable price. Im going to get an order in tomorrow. They even have the clips for $8 each.

 I certainly would not pay 200 for one that wasn't perfect. Do you have a big 5 sporting goods in your area? The one that I found this one at was able to check all the others in their computer and gave me three others in the area that had the m95 in stock. I checked those and the one that was at the first store was in the best shape so I went back and bought it. (It actually had a tag that said "Hold" on it but it was a few days past the date the guy was supposed to get it so they sold it to me.) If you call they should be able to look up all the ones in the area. The store in west valley utah had one. Their number is (801) 982-7800. If you call your local one and they dont know the SKU to check for,that one should be able to check if they still have it in stock. If you call them I bet they can check their computer and see who has them in your area (assuming they clerk isn't an idiot or just lazy) They guy there said they have them marked down to $99.94 to clear them out.

 If you get one ,be careful when you have the bolt out. If you let the firing pin snap (not sure exactly what I did tocause it) not only is it a pain to get back into the gun,it can take a chunk out of your finger.

I think Century arms had these a few months back for $100 if i remember correctly.  They no longer list them now.  But i wonder if the'll turn up in the Ufix'em soon?                         BB

One guy on another forum took out the barrel and installed a chinese sks pinned barrel so he could shoot the 7,62x39 round. My point is if you see a bad barrel in one and its dirt cheap it maybe worth a barrel change.
