7 MM spc.
« on: July 19, 2010, 09:46:38 AM »
Has anyone marketed a 7 MM based on a 6.8 spc case ? Or has any other 7 MM been used in an AR 15 platform ? It would seem to be a logical round. I would think it would compare to a 7X30 waters .

I would think so.
Since the 30 Remington Case is the paresnt case for the 6.8 and the the 30 Remington is a rimless version of the 30-30 then necking up 30 Remington cases that were necked to 6.8 would make the round = to 7-30 Waters.
With the slightly wider bullet you could go a little heavier than the 6.8 (277) and shoot .284 (7mm) the same speed and still fit in a standard AR magizine.
But why not just neck up 6mm PPC to 7mm (7.62X39 is the parent case)? 6mm PPC is almost 243 Win in speed so I would guess that a 7mm Version could be made to shoot almost 7-08 speeds or 7-30 / 7 TCU Speeds.
They already have 7mm TCU that is a 223 case necked up to 7mm and with lighter bullets can fit in the AR Mag.

Because many  you talk to ( some of the guys selling at shows ) seem to see alot of problems with the 7.62X39 being hard on extractors ( maybe from steel case ammo)?

not extractors but the bolts themselves are prone to breakage. the extractors are fine, but a 7.62x39 bolt simply has too much material removed from the face and is at the limit even with factory 7.62x39 ammo

Here's the problem with a 7mm AR15 variant, it may seem like a good idea but the problem is that ALL hunting weight 7mm bullets are designed with cartridges in mind that have almost 1000 fps on what's possible from the AR magwell creating problems with under expansion on game. Another consideration is the SPC case would have to be drastically shortened to allow most 7mm bullets to fit in the magwell further reducing MV's

bear in mind that the SPC is a greatly SHORTENED 30rem variation. I shoot a wildcat that necks 6.8 cases back up to 30 cal, but it's not 30rem it's the short lil 30hettett

krochus , thanks .
I got to ask though , a 120 7mm bullet is shorter than a 6.8 or 6.5 bullet . Also there are 7 mm bullets for single shot pistols in the same or less fps range and rounds such as 7X30 waters and 7br .
It would be a light bullet rifle but the 6.8 is also .
Anyway just a thought .

I would go the other way, 6.5 SPC.

When I got the 6.8 I looked at the 6.5 G.  it seemed better at long range but the 6.8 seemed better with in 200 yards , which it seems was the idea when it was developed.
I was going to deer hunt with it and have only shot one deer over 200 yards away in over 40 years of hunting so i got the 6.8. I was just thinking out loud about the 7mm , The 6.5 would be a good one also . they would all be deer collectors fer sure.

what would interst me is a 257spc. Lots more good bullets available in 25 cal. The rest of them are to close to the 762x39 ar i allready have. By the way my bolt is till holding up and ive gone through 2 and a half cases of wolf and at least a 1000  handloads in it so far. Im not saying it will never break but alot of ars dont see that many rounds in there lifetime.
