Buy a map...The US Forest service has very good maps for all national forest land in the southwest. I've spent a little time in the Lincoln national forest but much prefer the Gila, north of silver city, NM.

I envy you guys who live close to a National Forest.

The nearest one to me is a 6-7 hour round trip. Not a bad drive for a long weekend outing but too far for day trips.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

If the Lincoln is anything like our forests in Wyo, then any flat ground anywhere near water with road access will be occupied. You can find peace and quiet on the forests, but not near any water that is near a road. I quit going there a long time ago.

My suggestion is to hike a reasonable distance, then camp and fish. The further you go the less intrusion you'll have, but just a mile will make a huge difference. Another suggestion if you go this route, don't wait too long into the afternoon to find a campsite. Finding a flat spot big enough for even a small tent can be a real problem what with rocks and brush. Also my pet peeve, any such spot will most likely have a dirty nasty fire ring right in the middle, so you have to pitch your tent in the rough ground. Here again if you move away from the water your chances of finding a nice campsite will improve.

I wouldn't be tempted to go without a tent. Even if the chances of rain are slim, the skeeters will drive you crazy. You don't have to have a $300 tent to crawl into for the hours of darkness. I used to use a little pup tent. It was fully screened, and it was way lighter than the expensive tents. Cost about $30 back when I was hike/fishing.

NM is a very dry state. Skeeters will not be much of a problem. Now snakes and spiders might be.  ;)

Changed my mind again. Going to Santa Fe national forest. Cooler temps. Be ther next weekend if anybody wants to go fishing with a greenhorn. Does anyone know local rules and attitudes about firearms carry there?

bilmac,

I lived in New Mexico for 16years and hunted & fished the areas in question.  ;) Not trying to start a ruckus with you but I think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to NM.  ;D

If your looking for skeeters, I can send you some upstate NY ones in a nice wooden box. Release one at a time and shoot with your rifle.    ;D
Have fun on your outing. Your stepson will remember it for a lifetime. Keep us posted.

Skeeters? Let me tell you about gulf coast Texas skeeters. I heard the other day one was seen molesting a turkey.
