45/70 Buffalo Rifle With Tang Sight
« on: July 20, 2010, 04:20:15 AM »
Gentleman,

My first post!

I have a H&R 45/70 buffalo rifle.  The gun shoots very well with cast bullets in our Siloulette (I call it Silly-Wet) matches.

2 issues:

Issue 1, Rear sight:
I ordered a Williams Foolproff click adjustable sight to replace the slide adjustable unit.  The Foolproof is okay as far as the click repeatablility goes, but the sight is still too far away from my eye.  I would like to inlet a piece of steel into the tang wood to act as a base to mount a W&E adjustable tang sight.  Has anyone done this on an H&R Buffalo Rifle?

Would a mid-range height tang sight be good for this project?

Issue 2, Curved steel buttplate

I have to wear a shoulder pad with this curved steel buttplate.  I never wear one with anything else, and I shoot military rifles with steel plates all the time!  I would like to change the buttstock to one with a flat, solid rubber pad, and maybe a pistol-grip style.   Does anyone sell a semi-finished walnut blank in this style?

Thanks In Advance, ultramag44

Gunstocksinc.com for the stock, search the FAQ's for "sights" for the answer to the sight problem.

UM44,

Hello & Welcome,

If you go to the FAQs sticky at the top of this forum, well actually 5 down from the top, open it and use ctrl "F" to search for Recoil Pad there a few types folks have used with the curved steel butt plate.  These are either slip on or lace on style pads, the lace on type look nice on the BC.  Another option is to cut off the end of the stock and install a pad, like a limbsaver grind to fit.  As Kevin said, GSI sells stocksets or you could post in the H&R Want to Trade forum and maybe swap your stock for another type.

I have seen photos of tang mounted rear sights here in the forum but have no experience with them. I think this style sight is also covered in the FAQ sticky.

BTW, you must own more than one Handi rifle, it's the law. ::)

Welcome!! The Long Range Sights for BC and Target link in the FAQs has lots of info on sights including tang mounting, Handirifle had a false tang added to his BC by Lee Shaver since the BC doesn't have a tang.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the hint on FAQ's!  :)

I just looked @ the Gunstocksinc.com site, that seems like the place to get wood.

Will the Handi-rifle  Factory style Straight comb pistol-grip type Buttstock they sell accept the BC action socket w/o major work (except the normal required 'hand-fitting')?

I can create a false tang from steel stock.  Then inlet the wood and secure the false tang w/ wood screws.   trackofthewolf.com sells an Italian-made mid-range tang sight that looks good.  It should work w/ the Lyman 17A (unless I want to get fancy, and put on a spare Redfield Olimpic up front)!  ;)

IMHO, you wont be satisfied with that cheap, sloppy Italian tang sight. It will be OK for a little while, at best, then you, like most who buy them, will get something better (unless you really arent serious about this). Then what do you do with it?  A 'schuetzen' staff height will get you out around 300yd, a short staff even farther. Unless you entertain 1000yds. you wont need a long staff. BTW, if you buy a tang sight with a more common and desirable between the hole mount, like for a Win. 1885 (high or low wall) it will be a lot easier to sell if/when you want to upgrade. The staff angle will be right when flipped up, too.
Regarding mounting. You do not need a metal tang to mount the sight base on. A lot of old original rifles, without 'tangs' had one mounted right on the wood. You can too. You always sight in on a new shootin' day anyway, right? Ignore the warnings about the sight shifting due to humidity, etc. No matter which way you go on this, remember the stock bolt hole is not that far below the surface.

I have been thinking about that steel butt plate on my BC as well. I have been thinking about trying to fit thye rear stock from the H&R Trap shotgun.

I cut and sanded a wood piece to go inside my lace on pad to flattenout the base. Lengthened the pull and took the kick to nothing (well plus the 19 ounces of lead in the stock bolt hole).  And it still looks "classic" in the rack.

I have never figured out how to shoot with a tang sight. I have an Italian repro sharps 45-70 with a tang sight. I can't hold the gun right with my thumb in front of the sight and if I put my thumb behind behind the sight it gets beat up bad and cut during recoil. The sight is right in the way any way you look at it. I hate it. How do you guys shoot with a tang sight?

I hear you, although a lot of people seem to use them with luck.  I am actually hoping to get one of these barrel sights if they ever come back into stock.  I have found that Brownells has them for less, but rarely in stock.  8(

Don't hold your breath on the Smith sight, Smith is heavy into military contracts and tactical gear, their Cowboy products take a back seat, took me over 6 months to get a new peep slider to replace the defective slider for my Long Range barrel sight several years ago, sent a bunch of emails, called several times, got replies, but no action.  :-\

Good to know Tim, appreciate it.  I was also looking at a 1903 Springfield ladder sight reproduction, but a friend of mine who's an ex-gunsmith said he had some in a box somewhere, so I'm holding off on that one until he attempts to locate them.  I am unsure if that style ladder would meet some of the BPCR requirements, but figured it would at least get me shooting some BP loads at long range with iron sights. 8)

Lay your thumb along the side of the sight base, not wrapped around the wrist.

Some fellas are using the Krag sight, probably similar to the 1903, been a long time since I saw one, it fits the barrel and just needs one hole drilled and tapped. Dunno if it's BPCR legal either tho.

I got mine on E-bay for something like a total of $15. Was still packed in grease from where it was removed to upgrade the sights in 1896.

This is my sight, from the same guy I bought it from. Seems they are worth more now.....

Since he seems to have a stock of them you might contact him direct and see if he'd agree to sell you one dorect, non-auction.
