Model 41
« on: July 20, 2010, 05:30:26 PM »
My brother-in-law just bought a used Model 41 that is in good condition with the exception of the slide. While it is not bad, it does have some blue rubbed off. He wants to just buy a new slide. I told him it is used, use it. He only paid $375 for it so he's into it right and my feelings are that a new slide won't increase it's value enough to make the purchase worthwhile. Any thoughts on it?
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

IF he was to refinish ....then send it to S&W for a reblue...or a competent refinisher like Fords. One could simply refinish the slide alone. Tough to make a determination on a verbal description.

I was offered  a circa 1964 M-41 that had been placed in a cotton lined case either cold or wet  and rusted badly. Surface rust on the sides of the slide and a little on the top.  This was several years back...and at that time S&W would not sell a slide...unless you sent the frame in and had the slide FITTED to the frame. As I recall it was cost prohibitive. Very close to the price of a then new 41.

Few years back I ended up with another early 41 that had been rusted. The owner sent it to a competant refinisher who buffed, then lightly bead blasted the slides then ARMALLOYED the entire gun, mags and even the Olympic counterweights. Then replaced the rear sights with new blued sight assemblies. So it looks like I have a stainless M-41.

Can You post a digital of the gun??  Would help to see how bad the blue damage goes.

The #41 is as nice a 22 pistol as you will find.  If it is just finish wear, go ahead and shoot it.  If the finish bugs you, then get it re-blued.  Replacing the slide because of finish wear does not make sense.

I would agree. Just shoot it as is. Enjoy it as it was meant to be enjoyed. I've always liked those 41's. The Cabela's in Glendale had a nice one in the gun library the last time I was in there. It looked pretty decent behind the glass. I wouldn't let them take it out and show me. I had to keep walking.

Sure would be nice to have though...
