Velocities in your .17 HMR?
« on: July 20, 2010, 08:01:14 PM »

  These little things just make me look back at them all the time and I was wondering what kind of velocity y'all are getting out of them?

             thanks,

I've never actually had the chance to shoot mine through a chronograph, so I have no "real world" experience in that respect.  However, comparing my range results after sighting in at 100 yards and measuring my drop and wind drift at ranges of 150 - 300 yards to those achieved by other shooters, I can say with some confidence that my results are typical to those found on the Varmint Al website.

For a 22" barrel, average velocity is around 2500 fps with the posted velocity being 2550.

Velocity can vary from 2500fps to almost 2700fps, just depends on the barrel.

   I wanted more information myself.
  I set up 3 different name brand chronographs . ran
  a ten shot string thru each one, transfered all the data
 to A "RCBS Ballistical CUD raw data program"

 RIFLES TESTED  were all 17HMR.

 77/17 Green Mountain  20 " brl   = 2663 fps

 10/17 Green Mountain  20"  brl   = 2630 fps

 10/17  Volquartsen        18 " brl   = 2685 fps

 DATA= average from 10 shot string each gun . Each
   gun shot at 3 locations / chronographs.
 TOTAL = avg-per 30 rds = the above figures.

  WOW! That's terrific... I was looking at velocities from a handgun in .17 HMR and they were showing 2168 so that's not too bad a drop from rifle to handgun.

I chronyd my 17 HMR one afternoon several years ago and got 2610 fps with the 17 gr hornady load.   also got 2340 fps with the 20gr xtp load.  Just came out faster than factory specs.
