Bird hunting AK
« on: December 23, 2002, 03:12:22 PM »
Are there any Mat-Su valley area hunters that like to shoot ptarmigan over pointing dogs. I just moved up the 1st of November and my Brittany Spaniel is dying of boredom. We have been unable to find any birds. I have checked out several areas that co-workers have recommended but I doubt that any of them have been off their sofas in 20 years. I am looking for someone who knows where to find some birds in return for the opportunity to hunt behind a good pointing dog. I work 7 days on and 7 days off so I need something to fill my weeks off. Mart,
I wish I knew where to find the ptarmigan as well.  I've got a Springer that I'd like to get on some birds.  If grouse are on the menu try the Palmer Creek Road out of Hope on the Kenai.  I've seen a few out there.

Well the road is closed now, but the hills and tundra along the Denali highway are great places for ptarmigan.  There should be some good areas along the parks between Cantwell and Fairbanks.  There is also quite a few birds in the flats near Eureka and Gunsite Mountain.  Snow is kinda deep in spots though.
