pistol cartridge bolt guns...
« on: July 22, 2010, 05:27:34 AM »
I know Ruger makes (sometimes) the 77/44.  I'd be interested in a small bolt gun in .327 Federal, .357 Mag or Max, .45 LC, .480 Ruger and stuff like that.  Does anyone make rifles like that?  Something on the order of a Model 7 sized rifle but in a pistol cartridge.

Im not aware of any bolt guns chambered in centerfire pistol cartridges.  Seems to me there would be a fair market for such a beast if made in a light weight and quick handling platform.  Load'em down for small critters and make'm hot for deep woods game.  Give me a model 7 in .475 Linebaugh. ;D

I don't want a full sized rifle chambered in .357 mag or anything like that.  I agree that a certain manufacturer who seems to make a lot of "special runs" for some of the big distributors could probably make a fair profit off of rebarreling/chambering their existing bolt gun to some other cartridges.  I would LOVE to be able to get a small, light, walnut and blued bolt rifle in some of the pistol chamberings.  Seems that at one time Ruger made a run of .357 Mag bolt rifles as CHP commemoratives.  They also make the 77/44.  I'm trying to talk myself into buying one of those to have suppressed.  I'd sure like to see what a .357 Max in a 20"-22" barrel bolt gun would do.  May have to check into having some built...

might take a smaller action than most make , then there is the rim to deal with in the magazine and feeding . It might be better to look to a 10 mm or one of the longer 38 autos . or even a 45 acp mag. of some sort .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

How about the Spanish Star "Destroyer" bolt action clip fed carbine, in 9mm Largo (basically, a hot 9mm Luger, still loaded commercially)?

I think if you want one you are going have to buy either a Destroyer action or a Ruger 77/44 or 77/22 hornet and make what you want and have custom magizines made.
I wish Ruger would come out with a few different Pistol caliber rifles.
327 is one of them.  With the option for 32 H&R mags.
Any the the 98 action can be made to shoot pistol rounds but you will have to block the magzine forward or make it take pistol mags.

I've put maybe 250 rounds thru my new All Weather 77/44 carbine. Never thought I'd prefer it over my levers, but I do. Wish like 'ell they'd make one in .357.

Okay... I'm saving my $$$ for a 77/44.  Got me a plan for it.  Too bad they can't make the .357, .327 and some others.  They know how to make the guns work and feed, they know how to make the mags, they are missing a bit of a market in our opinions...

Not sure if ruger is missing marketing or if they are looking at Engineering resources and production and putting them where they think they have the biggest bang for thier buck.
While it does not seem like a lot to us to change the barrel from 44 to 357, 327, or 5.7 ...... (the list goes on)
Having worked for a manufacturer I know it is the time documenting the parts and writting the specification for that part that holds back a lot of companies from making all kinds of stuff.
From an article I read a while back in Shooting Sportsman they were interviewing the CEO of Ruger and he hinted that there were a lot of new products headed out this and next year.  I came away with the impression it was going to be more AR and Police oriented.
They asked about the Gold label and when they would get back to it and the answer was that there were a lot of projects ahead of it like the exciting AR and the pocket auto lines.  Maybe he was trying to snow us and will show up at SHOT with a 77/327, a Gold Double rifle and the return of the Bisley single six guns and bring one out in 327.  Who knows hopefully we are pleasantly suprised and they made exactly what you wanted.

noguns, the CHP commerative .357 was on the Ruger #1 very lightweight barrel with Alex Henry forend, beautiful little gun, wish I hadn't sold mine.  Many of them have since been converted to .357 Max and some .35 rifle cartridges.

There are two that I'd like to see I'd like to see a ruder or bolt gun in 500 smith (I'd trade my stainless guide gun in for one in a heart beat) and a bolt gun in 5.7x28. I know this is off the topic but also I'd like to see a bolt gun in a 5.7x28 necked to 17, (I think it'd be fun as hell on woodchucks) Aother thing (this is a lever gun) but Marlin for a short time made a 475 linebaugh in a lever.
