I purchased a rem 700ss 5r a while back,  for those not familiar with these,  it has a 24'' varmint contour barrel.  I have been saving and setting this up since november '09.  I finally came across a gently used leupold mk4 4.5-14x40 lr/t scope and recieved my leupold dual dovetail rings and base yesterday.  I mounted my scope and put my bipod on it so it is all ready to go now.  I would like to try some of the hornady 168gr AMAX through it since i want to hunt with it more so than target shoot and dont want to buy $40 a box ammo (I dont reload).  Has anyone tried this ammo yet?  What is a good choice for a .308 hunting style bullet to use for accuracy in a HB.  I want to stay in the 165-168 range.

I hear you on the reloading.  I have to put back some cash and get the equipment.  My hunting will be coyotes, g hogs, and just about any varmints.  I hope to even get a deer with it next month since a farmer i know has nuisence permits for me to take advantage of.  I am hoping to make it out and do some shooting with it next week so i have some targets to show as well as the rifle.  They should be up by mon. might even do a new post.

Yeah it takes a little to get started but it pays for itself pretty fast. Keep an eye out for used reloading gear. That can save you a ton getting started. You can get into a Lee Kit for around $100 that will get you started and has almost everything except dies and a lube pad. The powder measure & scale are a little hard to use but will get the job done with a little patience. I would avoid them however if you can afford it. You will end up replacing them someday anyway. The Lee O-press that comes with the kit is ok for most stuff. I like the redding powder measure the best.

I have shot a whole lot of whitetail in my life, most of them with a .308. I prefer a bullet that expands rapidly and drops e'm were they stand. I don't like a "premium" core bonded or partition bullet for white tail. Those are great for elk & big mule deer.

When reloading, I like a good old 150gr Sierra Game King Boat tail for whitetail. Super accurate, great for longer ranges and has the right combination of rapid expansion & penetration for whitetail.

I don’t know off hand who sells loaded rounds using Game Kings. For already loaded ammo. You could try the Hornady .308 Win 150 gr SST cartridge. The SST bullet has similar characteristics to the Game King I have been told.

Actually for whitetail Winchester Super-X loaded with 150gr power point bullets or Remington Express with 150gr Core-Lokt bullets will work just fine for a lot less $$! You would be able to afford to practice a little. ;)

Marine,
I have had my Rem 5r for several years now.  I have been reloading for a few years, but I shot alot of factory loads when I first got my gun.  I found several factory loads that would shoot below 1 moa, but to my suprise the best factory load I found was one of the cheapest.  Go to Walmart and buy a box of Federal Power shok 150's(blue box). This load has consistantly shot under .5 moa in by gun and can usually be bought for around $14 per box.  I have shot several deer and many hogs with this bullet, and none have walked away.  If you feel you need a heavier bullet, the Winchester 168 Silver tips always seem to group well.

When you start reloading, I have found several loads that shoot sub .5 moa out to 300 yards.

I will definitely give those a try.  I do like federal ammo and if i can shoot the cheap stuff i will.  thanks for the heads up.

Not a Remington, but I had a Savage 10FPE (the tactical with Choate stock) in .308 that would shoot 180 gr Core-Lokt better than any factory match or hunting load, regardless of weight, I put through it (Federal, Remington, Black Hills, Winchester, S&B, PMC Bronze).  I have a 100 yard 5 shot group that looks like a baby clover with them.  IIRC CTC measurement was about 5/8".  Have you shot that purdy thing yet?

 I made it out for a while today but no pics of groups.  I did manage to sight it in though.  This thing was killer on my collar bone.  After 25 rnds i was ready to call it quits.  the best group i got at the end was around an inch but I know it could do better when im feeling less sore.  I will be back at it but will take my time shooting. Im so used to my 223 rifles that this was a whole new experience for me.

I understand the shoulder thing. First time trap shooting was "forced" to shoot 4 rounds. 100 ends of 12 ga can tear up a shoulder.  I didn't even shoot the .22s for a week. Glad you got it sighted in. Who knows though, maybe that load is only MOA capable and the great load is still out there.  Keep hitting the range and toughen up that shoulder. It's been a while since I have shot anything but a .223 as well.

I shoot 12 ga alot due to deer, rabbit, and turkey. but prone with a rifle against my collarbone was too much.  i might add a decelerator pad to the stock for target shooting. i will go at it again on wednesday with the hornady.  Today was rem corelokts.

i was thinking of just doing a slip on for when i am targeting and then it could come back off.  That is how i solved the problem with my old 700 in 30-06. its an HS precision and that can easily be replaced if i were to ever sell.  I rarely worry about resale since i buy to hunt and use.  I do see where you are coming from though.

Sorry for the late reply, but I don't have the most free time at the moment.  I purchased a 5R back in '07 and it shot very well for me.  The 1:11.25" twist is made for the 175gr bullets, but will generally shoot anything in the 150-190gr range well.  Mine did especially well with the 155 and 175gr SMK over Reloader 15.  I went through the factory stock to another H-S stock (M24 style), to a McMillan A4.  Changing the stock will not hurt value since the rifle is not a collector item.  I finally had the rifle rebarreled to a .260 this past winter and bedded it in a Manners T4.  Great out of the box rifle, and a pretty good choice of optic for it, especially with the amount of internal elevation adjustment.  I ran a couple of MK 4's in 4.5-14x50mm with TMR reticle a year or two back.  I just wanted mil/mil or MOA/MOA in my scopes.

The biggest gripe I had (or have since I still own the action) with my 5R was the ergonomics of the H-S stock, and the way it fit my shooting hand.  A stock swap can make wonders of this rifle, especially if you know how to bed it.  The triggers are pretty damn easy to work down to acceptable levels as well, but that will generally void the factory warranty on the trigger.  I've had great luck with the McMillan A4/A5 stocks and the Manners T4.  Gotta pay to play though.

I am looking forward to playing with that rifle again when I get back stateside.  Good luck.

Seems like if a person was going to replace everything but the action, any short action 700 donor would have been a much cheaper route.

Why mess with perfection and why would anyone want a .260 anything?

  There is alot of hype about the 700 5r.  It seems to shoot very consistently and with the right ammo it has shot sub moa for me so far.  I had been shooting a xr-100 and decided to upgrade to a rifle that could handle a deer if i wanted.  The stainless kind of appealed to me as well since i could take it out in the rain without freaking about rust.  the palm swell in the stock is pretty fat even for my hands.  
  Depending on where you lived i could see a .260 being a better long range than the .308.  Im in ohio so there isnt much over 300yds where i hunt to take advantage of.  swampman you seem like you are afraid of altering a gun, why is that?  Ive heard you say that the resale value is ruined if you alter a gun.  Why would you buy it if you were thinking about selling something?  just makes no sense to me.  I like to personalize a weapon to suit me not the possible next owner.

You've never bought something and resold it?

I buy lots of guns for 1/4 what they would have sold for because someone "personalized" them.  Usually I have to find the parts to return them to stock condition and then I have to sell the stuff that's left over to recover the money.  It's a good hobby and I get some nice stuff for about nothing.

The 5R is said to be the most accurate rifle you can buy by some of the best shots in the country.  Sub-.3 groups are very common right out of the box.

  I buy and resell alot! its sad really the amount of guns that i let go.  I still like to customize the ones i like though.  I as well have to buy parts and fix guns that someone else screwed up and let go. 
  I wasnt trying to pick a fight and im glad you didnt take it that way.  I have friends that are just terrified when it comes to customizing and i was just curious how you felt about it. I like to have stock military guns but for hunting rifles its fair game.

Nosler Ballistic Tip Boat Tail 165s with 44grs of Varget works well on paper and on whitetails.

 I have the rem 700 5R SS also and mine likes the heavier bullets, because of the 5 rifling design the heavier bullets stabalize better. Nightforce titanium rings and a Nikon 4-16x50 mildot and I'm getting 1/2 inch groups @200 yds in a lead sled shootimg Federal Match Grade Ammo. This stick is a DREAM!!!!!

Hi sybo,
  I just bought 80 rounds of 165gr federal GMM.  I am hoping it does well.  It was on sale for $19 a box.  The last ammo i tried was hornady superformance 150gr.  Consistent but just not good enough for me. 
  How long have you had your rifle sybo?  What weight bullet are you using?  You should post a pic of your rifle I would like to see it, if you dont mind.

The 5R's rifling helps with bullet jacket deformity, the 1:11.25 twist rate helps stabilize the heavies a bit better.  Mine actually shot great with the 155gr SMK, and the 175gr SMK...come to think of it the 178gr A-Max as well.

That's the great thing about me owning the rifle and not you.  260 anything is generally better than a 308 winchester anything at longer ranges, especially for target shooting.  I've gained 300 more yards with about 75% of the recoil.
