Got my first coyote of the year today
« on: July 22, 2010, 03:28:04 PM »
My wife called me and said that there was a coyote around my brothers pond. I jumped in the truck and headed that way. I already had an AR with a 204 upper in the truck. It was still there when I got there, and it`s still there I`ll bet. It was last years pup and had evently never been shot at. He gave me time to get out of the truck befor he started troting off. First hit was not where I wanted it, to high, but broke it back so I guees it was as good as a heart shot. ( Sometimes even bad shots turn out good.) It was really skinny, but didn`t show mange or any other deaise I could tell. Just left him lay anyway.

I have been seeing some but on the shoulder of a nearby Interstate! They do not act too concerned with some even sitting to watch cars go by.

Brush & fields are high else where. I do know of a couple local hay fields but have not taken the time to stake them out.

I have several people that call me when ever they see a coyote. That was the first 1 I was able to get to and kill in the summer though. It`s like throughing cards at a hat, if you throuhg long enough you`ll put 1 in.  ;) It did 1 other thing, it`s got me in the mood to start working on my coyote rifles for this fall and winter.

Sounds like someone that I know very well ;) and that word of mouth (lets say the Coyote grapevine) sure can pay off.

Congrats on your first Coyote of the year. It is always great to get that first one every year. For me it tells me I still know what I am doing and that I can shoot.

For me the first one of the year this year didn't go so well (not well for me, great for the Coyote) as I missed. I had been at the Shooting Range working on my Remington Model 700 SPS in .308. I had shot some groups and upon heading home I spotted a Coyote sitting on the edge of a pond watching the little Geese swim by. I promptly missed said Coyote, not once but twice.

Fast forward two weeks. A farmer talked to me at the Convience Store on day. He told me when they were putting up Hay they had a Coyote following the tractors around the field like a dog. The very next evening about sunset I headed down to that hay field. I hadn't sat there very long at all when I spotted a coyote on the far side of the meadow (about 200 yards out). When the Coyote presented me a broadside shot I sent a 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip out of my 16" Bushmaster M4 ORC it's way. This Coyote wasn't as lucky as the first one I missed with the .308 as the 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip centered the near side shoulder.
