whats the best way to remove damaged vanes...?

from aluminum arrows.  to prep for new shrink vanes.
bought the tool from bohning   but it don't like me too much !!!
any tricks or secrets ?..... i know your better off buying new arrows but any help
would be appreciated.   hey rickyp, notice i did'nt say bolts !!!

Yup,you did good.

The way I remove most of the vaines from my arrows is a shoot trough of a deer.


When I want to remove them I use a single edge razor and scrape the old vanes off along with as much glues as I can. I then use the good rubbing alcohol and clean it and use a scrubbing pad and make sure everything is nice and clean doesn't take long and works well for me.  I buy a lot of used arrows and a few screw up from pro shops I then cut them back and fefletch them. I think I have about 100 arrows in my arrow cases.

I have been thinking about the shrink wrap vaines but they don't come in my colors and I was thinking about the added weight may mess up the weight forward of the arrow. then there is the chance that you can get a ware spot along the wrap and if ti fails you will loose all your fletchings.

I tend to be cheep and if I should have a vain  come off I normally find it clean it up and reuse it.

thanks, i really am just rigg'n these things up for un-cockers after a skunked hunt 
i too believe in the unbalance as you stated. i only trust my proven arrows for hunting. i tried the shrink thing and needed to resight my redot.... NO !! I ain't gunna do that fera rigg'd arrow.
i'll just use them to relieve the limb.

that "tool" some offer really don't do good on aluminum shafts.

What Tool are you using?
while the razor blade may not be the safest way it is very cheep and works. If you try this with carbon arrows be very careful not to cut into the portective coating on the arrows.

I have some very strange arrows for decocking, I use what ever fletchings I can find  I have a few that have a 2", 4" and a 5" and they seame to shoot fine.

when I hunt I normaly have a small game arrow with me.  at the end of the day I have been known to shoot a squirrel or two from my stand just to decock the bow. (only shoot what is in season though)   I also have a few hard rubber blunt points that I will just pick a target out in the fiels and shoot it this helps me judge distance and shooting off hand.  I also have a rineheart target ball that I toss out in the field where I park my truck and shoot it

JMHO, if your only shooting 2-3 feet into the ground to decock, I wouldn't even bother with fletchings.  If you shoot at that dark brown leaf over there from the treestand, well that's a different story.  In my four arrow quiver I keep 2 new heads, a once or twice deer kill for the odd leaf, squirrel, coon, or coyote and a dirt arrow for uncocking at dark.  If I'm at my cabin, I keep 3 good arrows and the once shot.  I keep an old vaneless on the porch to uncock.

Don't shoot a vaneless at ANYTHING other than the ground in front of your feet!
