S&W Victory questions pic added
« on: July 24, 2010, 05:08:37 PM »
i got a old Smith M+P but have never owned a Smith double action so have a couple questions. First i have a number stamped on the bottom of the grip frame(square butt with a lanyard swivel) and different but matching numbers on the crane and frame. Can i determine this gun's age with either of these numbers and if so where. Walnut grips,k frame,38 special, fixed sights, slender barrel profile, firing pin mounted to the hammer, stamped US property GHD...the bluing is pretty much browned, but the action is tight, very smooth double action pull, no buggered up screws looks to be 100% original. I think it's a pre-war m+p but am not sure......

The number on the bottom of the grip frame is the serial number.  It may also be on the bottom of the barrel.  the numbers in the crane are assembly numbers that were used at the factory when the gun was made to keep all the parts for each gun together.  If you PM me the serial number I can look it up and give you an idea of when it was made.  If you don't want to send the full number, tell me how many digits it has, and send me the first 3.

Kevin(Krod47) gave me some info and i researched some myself.... i have a SV serial# 38 Special K frame Victory model, mechanically it is in excellent condition, the S&W black parkerized finish is well worn, all serial #'s match, even the grips are numbered and matched to the gun, smooth walnut grips,US Property GHD stamp on the top strap, 5 screw, hand ejector. Nice little piece of history and should be an excellent shooter. No safe queens in my house so i'll shoot it but not alter it. I pretty much talked my friend out of this gun. He was telling me about this old POS he was gonna hang on the wall...... :D. Here's a pic

Very cool...  Like I said.  Nobody can own just one.  You might be hooked on old S&Ws now.  :)  they make great shooters.  Tried and true for many years.
