The letter type design 4 replies above, would make a neat tattoo for a morko owner to express himself with.

The only thing that I can expound upon at this point, is that, even though the 14th c. may seem removed from rune and Anglo-Saxon, Old English, they were far from forgotten.

Among the "Bryggen Inscriptions" found in Bergen, Norway, is the "Valkyrie stick", dated from the late 14th c.. The stick features a runic inscription, intended as a charm.

Christian(?) Norway, magic, elder faith and runes during the time of morko.

Now think of morko itself with its runes, and mysticism and inscriptions like a charm stick.

Even poems in the 13th c. Icelandic edda tradition like "Odin's Raven Magic" were being written in the 14th-15th centuries.

The Cult of Odin flourished in the 13 & 14th centuries.

The bulk of Odin place names flourished in Sweden.

Runes, Odin, magic, Norse and Anglo-Saxon language was alive and well in the 14th century when morko was born.

Now go and get your tattoo.

Incitatus,

Quote from Incitatus: "The script is an odd mix.  Some is classic 14th century black letter or Gothic".

Question from The Lion's Paw: Perhaps you can enlighten me as to what is NOT "classic 14th century black letter Gothic"? :-\   I'd appreciate knowing your opinion as to what it is.

Rich,
On that Ethnographic Arms and Armour forum that DD posted a link to, there was a collector from Germany that made claims that the Mörkö barrel's lettering did reference "Maria" (the Mother of Jesus), and that the rest of the letters were used more as mere decoration, not as symbols conveying any meaning. Now I have no idea about this man's opinions being valid or not, but IIRC (the thread has been deleted) he kept calling the lettering "minuscule Gothic"; what did he mean by that, he didn't mean small or tiny did he?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Thanks Douglas, I found the site, but I couldn't find the thread.

RC - This is what the man said: "As far as I remember, the Gothic minuscule script is illegible, its letters being just stylized ornaments." *

"The Gothic minuscule script mentions the word maria several times; the rest is, as I said, illegible and mere decoration. This religious invocation of Holy Mary is sometimes found on helmets and swords."

Fritz,
I saw that site long ago. "minuscule gothic" is simply "black letter gothic".

Maria does NOT appear on the gun.

He's just parroting popular opinion.

After all, the museum held the same opinion. That is what has been disseminated over the years.

Urban Legend!

MARIA is MARIA. Go find it!  One only has to look.

They are seeing I N A M A which looks like IN AMA and confusing it with a MAMA which is further confused with MARIA.

It boggles the mind but religious people have always "seen" things that do not stand up to scrutiny.

I may be assuming interpretation with some multi-meaning words but by doing so, I am not forcing a square peg into a round hole.

Right now, I'm more interested in the pearl of wisdom that Incitatus dropt ???

Be careful to quote and accredit the other board and posters please.  This copyright stuff works both ways. They might be a bit thin skinned right now and smack us back.  If you quote the other board a link would help.

I just signed on with a 14th c. reenactor site that has an intelligent moderator who wrote a well researched article on Swedish handgonnes but I cannot get into it because the forum refuses my search. They are writing in English and Swedish but seem to only accept search questions in Swedish alphabet. I do not have a keyboard with accented letters.

I just want to dip into the mind-pool for a bit.

That was done using the process described on this page.  Be sure to note the use of the numeric pad for the numbers rather than the top row numbers.

How did you get the dots over the "o"? :-\

Ricky C.,

Umlaut diacritic, or dots over o's as some great language investigators say :P are accomplished like this.
Alt key + Three digits
153 Ö
148 ö

Alt key + Four digits
0214 Ö
0246 ö

I think you have to use the numeric pad numbers instead of the top row numbers for that to work.

Fritz: I play to my audience.

George: I am going to experiment with the keyboard today, if I have the time.

Dan: Now that I know Sweden is 7 hours off, I can gauge my communication time with the Swedish forum.
