Top Punch for 44 WFN
« on: July 25, 2010, 06:03:01 PM »
Veral, I'm very happily using your 260 gr WFN in my 44 mag., and up to now have been pan lubing them, since I'm set up that way (for my black powder cartridge shooting).

But now I'm putting Blue soft in my Lyman 450 and want to use it.  My top punch is the RCBS #421 but it is too small and leaves a ring around the top of that bullet.

Do you know which top punch (either Lyman or RCBS) will work for the 44 cal WFN?

I am not a machinist, but I have a small lathe, and if there is none that fits perfectly, I could take a top punch which was close to fitting, and open it up, if I knew which one to get to work on.  I also understand that you could get a bigger top punch, and then fill it in to proper size with some bedding coumpund.

What do you recommend?

  You have several options.
I make top punches for all my molds, for $10 each plus shipping.
You can fill any oversize punch with epoxy glue, then set it over a bullet just as it starts to gell up.  When it gets quite solid, remove the punch clean up the runover, and it will near mark a bullet or wear out.  The bullet should be waxed lightly so the glue doesn't stick to it.

You can open up some existing punch in your lathe, and fill it will epoxy as above so it doesn't mark bullets as discribed above.

I just used a flat punch, with no lip at all back when I was using Lyman sizers. I now use a Star because I have some fundamental disagreements with the design of the "in & out" sizers.
