I see on the dnr website they have a little thing on pigs and how they want people to shoot them on sight. Sure wish there were enough of them to actually worry about it in the wild. Hell with the deer heard like it is up here i wish they put some in the woods to breed! At least wed have something to shoot.

I agree totaly ron. We do crop damage deer shooting about every day in aug and sept and the deer numbers seem really down this year. I dont know if its numbers or the warm weather but even the last couple days that have been cool havent brought the deer numbers weve had in the last couple years. Let them breed so we at least have something to shoot. Where we do crop damage shooting is within a couple miles of two pig hunting operations so i would have to think that if they were in farmers fields wed be seeing at least one.

i for one, would be happy to hunt pigs in lieu of or in addition to deer hunting.  but the reality is, there is just not that many free ranging pigs out there.
maybe in other states, there may be more running wild, but in Michigan, not so much. I've seen the TV's shows and even participated in a MUCC/DNR symposium in Bay City about the 'pig problem' and they make the wild pigs to be such a problem for other animals and farmers crops.
but, i hunt birds, small game and whitetails as much as anyone , from southern saginaw county to clare/grayling and the central UP areas, and i have yet to see a pig in the woods.  last fall, 09,  i took the experts advice and tried to track, trace and hunt this packs free running hogs and i didnt find a single one, found alot of coyotes and even a few wolves in the UP. So im not so convinced there are enough hogs to even worry about right now.
it would be nice if there were, it give me something to hunt in the november woods in michigan

Yah, in our area I've yet to see one or even signs of one either.  I know I'll definitely put a .45 slug in the first one I do spot though!  ;)

Yeah, kind of makes you wonder where they're all at - I've yet to see one or even talked to anyone who has.

Seen way too many wolves, but no pigs!

Well from 2004 till this August, i lived in southern saginaw county, right near the shiawassee game preserve and michigan trophy hunts game ranch.
last year in 2009, trophy hunts got closed down, i wont comment on why or the scuttle bug about what really went on there but, they had a whole mess of pigs, russians, domestics and crosses. the DNR removed alot of them, but a large number of them got out thru the fence and onto a large nearby farm.  i talked with the farm owner, and made many a trip out looking for them hogs. 1 hog was shot by a son of a guy in the hunt party.
alot of hunters claim to seeing hogs on the tracts of state land around the farm fields, but next to nothing has been confirmed by the dnr.
i am out there as much anyone else, and i have not seen a single hog track, never mind a hog itself, which i do find curious.
this summer, the dnr checking on some rumors did find a good sized black bear with a cub in the shiawassee flats area, but no hogs ...
regardless of what the pig experts say i think the winter kills a good number of them off, and i just think there is just not that many of them state wide.

In the U.P I gotta think that the wolves would take care of any free roaming pigs.

Ive seen them at friends property that butt up againts the Kawkalin wildlife flooding area in midland county. These things do massive damage to an area. They have completely ruined all of the ground where they used to plant the deer forage. Theyve also not seen a turkey in two years, the pigs eat up all the egg in the nests. They are very spooky animals. Once they shoot one the rest disappear for awhile. The flooding backs up against the ausable state forest. Lot of area for them to run.   I'll post a forum link in a bit. Lots of readiong and pics there

We do NOT want these animals in  this state. The damage they do is incredible. Ive seen what they've done down south.
