New Slug Hunter-Need Help PLEASE!!!
« on: July 26, 2010, 05:28:07 PM »
Just purchased 870 Remington SuperSlug. Finally got to shoot it this weekend. I had it boresighted so started out at 25 yds. 1st two shots were 4 in. off bullseye. Adjusted & got w/ in 2 in. Moved to 50 yds. & that's where it got crazy!!! 1st shot was 7 in. high, next was 7 in. low & 3rd shot was 7 in. to the left. Went back to 25 yds & shot 2 in. away again. Let the gun cool, went back to 50 yds. 1st shot 1 1/2 in. from bullseye. Next 2 shots were 4 & 5 in. off. Shooting Hornaday SST 300 Grain 2 3/4. Shells shoot 2000 feet per second @ the muzzle & I know I should be shooting the slower slugs w/ my 1 35in. twist in barrell. Should this effect the shot that much? How long should I let the barrell cool after each shot? This is my 1st Slug gun & any advice or help is greatly appreciated! THANKS!

Honestly, it sounds to me as if your scope mounts have shot loose, or your scope has gone bad.  The recoil of a 12 gauge slug gun is massive, and you need a special scope built for shotguns, and top quality steel mounts. I recommend Leupold all the way.

Hope this helps.

I have had a super slug also for a few months.WHat was the weather like when you shot your slugs? Hot,humid, and muggy? Did you recover any of the sabots from your shots? It could be a multitude of things wrong that you are all over paper but it sounds to me that your gun got hot most likely of course from firing it and the weather and the heat distorted your sabots. This happened to me a few weeks ago with my smokeless muzzleloader.Shoot 2 shots at 50yds almost in the same hole, next few shots all over the paper.Let it cool off then put another shot where i wanted it to go.Recovered some of my sabots and they were just destroyed. There not suppose to do that but it does happen when you are shooting in hot weather, all plastic is different.Id say make sure your rings and bases are clamped down and try it again. You might have to wait 15 minutes between shots in order for your gun to cool down properly so it would not possibly distort your sabots.I havent tried any sst's yet.but i can tell you 2 3/4 lightfields shoot good in my gun.I load SPW's(saboted pressured wads) and i get very good accuracy and concistency with them.If your interested in loading your own slugs(lots lots cheaper) or fixing that gravely trigger yourself feel free to PM me.

Guys thank you for the feedback. I posted the question a few days ago and people were reading it but not giving any help.I paid alot of money for this gun and I just want to get it right,so Im thankful for the help. As for the scope I know its not that because I got the Nikon Slughunter on it w/good mounts. When I shot though, it was HOT !! Down here in Florida were having the hottest summer in my 33 years, so that could be a likely factor. Im going to get the Rem accu tips this weekend and give another try. Thanks again.

I got the same results as that shooting Remington slugs. All over the place. Switched to Winchesters and no problems. Followed real close with Federals. If i hunt deer i use nothing but Winchesters. Might also try some Lightfields. If you lived closer i have 3 different brands of slugs here you would be welcome to try. ;D

Best advice I ever got about rifled slug guns is before you even start to sight in, buy a bunch of diffrent types of sabot slugs and shoot for groups. Find what your gun likes to shoot and then sight it in.

I have a Super Slug also. When I first shot it I also had problems with accuracy and ejecting shells. I sent the gun back to Remington(there customer service was really nice to deal with),  they had my gun back in about 3 weeks. They re-worked the trigger, polished the chamber, and I believe lengthened the forcing cone. Back to the range with my super slug with 3"" accutips showed under1.5'' groups at 100 yards!! This barrel was built around the Accutips, and you may find that the 3'' are more accurate and produce less fliers than the 2 3/4'' because it engages the rifling of the barrel 1/4'' faster than the shorter shell, that was just an opinion,i am sure thereare alot or slug guns that shoot the 2 3/4'' more accuratlly than the 3'', but I  have 2 slug guns that definetly shoot the 3'' shells really well. I also like the Federal Barnes tipped and the Winchester Dual Bonds, and as stated before check your rings bases and scope before heading back to the range, slugs are expensive!!
