New barrel
« on: July 26, 2010, 05:56:11 PM »
So I broke down and finally ordered a Green Mtn barrel.
Looking forward to it.
Haven't shot the blazing lead pumpkin in far too long.
Couldn't fall in love with the inline so down the road she went.
Gonna find a donor Hawken or Renegade.

Anyone ever done this?  Do they drop right in?  Any precautions?  How do you like yours?

I have three Renegades and two Hawkens with GM barrels.   Nuff said?   ;)

The only thing you may need to do to get a drop in fit is trim the rear of the under rib a tad.  I had to trim three of mine a smidge - maybe 1/16" to 1/8".

They use a heavy packing grease down the bore, be sure to clean it all out really well.
Clean till a white patch comes out white!

Mine took 100-150 shot's to break in,,I mean it shot well, but it really dialed in that second year.

It sound like you've ordered the barrel before obtaining a stock. No doubt you are aware that they come in both 15/16" and 1" diameters so you have to get the right size to match. The 15/16" size will fit a Lyman Trade Rifle or Cabelas Investarms Hawken as well as T/C. I'm sure you'll be happy with the GM barrel.

All of the Renegades have 1" barrels.  The .45 & 50 Hawkens have 15/16" barrels.  The .54 & .58 Hawkens have 1" barrels.

GM makes .54 caliber in both 15/16 and 1" sizes. There are a lot more options for a rifle in 15/16 plus they're a good bit lighter than the one inch. Lighter can be both good and bad since heavier loads will recoil noticeably more in the lighter gun but is no problem with loads under 100 grains, which is more than plenty.
