The Stars & Bars or 1st National flag was the CSA flag until May of 1863.
Because the Stars & Bars was very simular to the Stars & Strips (USA flag) the two were mistaken on the Battlefields and so the CSA replace it with the 2nd National Flag (Also known as the Jackson or Stonewall flag as it was the flag drapped over his casket).
There were also issues with this flag on the battlefields as when there was no wind and it hung limp, it appeared to be a flag of truce or surrender so it was replace in March of 1865 but never saw any real use.
The Southern Cross was used on two flags, the Army Battle Flag and the Navy Jack.
The Battle Flag was used much of the war and it was a square shaped flag.
The Navy Jack was flown on CSA Navy Ships from 1863 to the end of the war. This is the flag that most people wrongly mistake for the CSA National Flag and it is also mistakenly called the Stars & Bars.
What I saw flying in Virgina was the Stars & Bars. I grew up in Shenandoah Valley and the people there know the history of the War of Northern Aggression. The schools there teach the same BS as do all school, but the real history is passed down from Father to Son, just as my Dad passed it on to me, even though I now live in Texas, I've passed it along to my son. The truth must be know!!!!!!!
Just like I know that most of the men of my family (both sides) made up the Company I of the 10th Virginia. It was formed at Conrad's Store (now known as Elkton) and nick named "Riverton Invincibles". They used a Company flag based on the battle flag that looked like this.
