45-70 load with 325 grain flex tips

I am going elk hunting in Wyoming this fall and am looking for a good load for my 45-70 Guide gun using Hornady flex tips.  Anyone have a good load they would like to share???

Here is a link to Hornady's reload data for the FTX bullets.  I load mine up to factory velocity with H4198 for my guide gun.  Hope this helps.  By the way what tag did you draw?  I live in WY and might know your area.

I believe you will need to use the shorter LE Hornady brass.

I've worked up a load using standard Winchester brass using IMR 4064.  It's a pretty modest load, but groups extremely well.  Problem is for any lever actions you have to use it single shot style because of the COAL.

Anyone have the case length of Hornady 45-70 brass for the flex tip?

God forbid I should have to actually buy a box of shells to get the cases and none of the local shops have any in stock for me to open and mic a case.

Hoping to be able to trim down a Starline case I have in abundance and try out the flex tip.

I had great luck using the FTX, Starline cases, CCI LR primers and between 34.3 and 52 grains of Reloader7 from Hornady's load notes.  I also shot some with BP substitute, but didn't get as good of accuracy, although the one I used didn't ever perform well and I've switched from Shockey's extra Gold to 777.  Have some loaded but haven't tested yet.  8)  In my .45-70 Buffalo Classic, the most accurate with the FTX and the Interlock hp's was around 46.3 grains.  Not too bad on recoil, although it is definitely there.  I also download some for my wife at 34.3 grains which kicks very light and I've had no issues with FTF.  Good luck. ;)

I believe you'd be way better off with the Remington 405 grain bullet.  The Hornady bullets offer nothing and performance is erattic at best.

I haven't found them to be erratic thus far.  The only Hornady bullet I've gotten some anomalies with were the 250gr. XTP standard rounds.  Had a few de-jacket, but I was probably pushing them too fast. ;)
