USERNAMES/HANDLES
« on: July 27, 2010, 04:47:26 AM »
One can usually tell when I am up too early and have had too much coffee.
Such is the case with this little string.
I am not picking on anyone's choice of USERNAMES. You got to have one and in some respects I understand not wanting to use real name---in the case of a few like Miley, Ironglow, Atlaw, and Dee they are wanted by the Law and don't want to be found.
Anywho, this thing is not anything more than observation---and well, pokeing a little fun.
In some usernames you can almost see a real name---some of you boys aint doin a good job of hiding from the law.
Usernames--I can see a description of some of you boys. Some may be a wantabe reputation and some defy an understanding of the choice. Some define occupations, some prefrences and some attitude---a lot of attitude.
Avatars are another subject--and some of you boys are a hoot---some scare me.
Signatures--That is a study for social scientist and maybe will one day show up as a Dissertation on a Doctorial Degree.
Anyway---I loves all of you---yea, even the ones that can't stand me.
My handle is an honest one. My name is William Layton Close. I am from the South, and, Lord knows, if you are from the South you can't have one name--but in the translation it becomes one name.
I was in the first grade before I came too the knowledge that William Layton was NOT one name.
Blessings

I was tagged "Grim" many years ago by some friends I rode with. I guess they thought I looked too serious all the time.

Definately see some unique names and Avatars  :o  ;) but WL you hit in on the head that you can really learn a lot from the signatures on the bottom.

A person could use the profile/name/avatar/etc info to do an in-depth study of the psychology of the type of members on this forum....oh wait, that may not be such a good idea  ::)   ;)

Mine comes from SubdeaconJoseph.  Had to shorten it to 8 characters or fewer for one provider, so have been using the shortened one since.  On some fora I'm 3855win, 5070govt, 4060maynard, or 4090sharps.

My avatar is the business end of a 3 inch Ordnance Rifle at the local American Legion Post.  It is a bit of a curiosity as it is one of just over 200 that the Ordnance Dept. had modified into breech loaders  at the Watervliet Arsenal in the early 1900s.  They took a blank from a Navy 6 pounder. The breech block is missing, but the tube itself seems to be in good shape. It was made in 1862 by the Phoenix Iron Company, Phoenixville, PA.  The tube weighed 816 pounds, inspected and accepted  by Capt. Theodore Thaddeus Sobieski Laidley (TTSL), Serial No. 334.   When I checked with the guy who keeps the National Registry of Surviving Civil War Artillery to get some information about it, I was thanked for adding to the database, as there was no record of this tube. Kinda cool.

I ain't hidin' from the law, so I'll fess up as to who I am.  I'm Chris Adams, I hail from Dayton, OH originally,  but my folks moved to Bluefield, VA when I was between 1st and 2nd grade, then on to Rock, WV when i was between 3rd and 4th grade, and have been in WV since I was 9.  I'm now 41 and reside in Princeton, WV, so I guess I'm more Hillbilly than Buckeye at this point.  I did get made fun of a lot in 2nd and 3rd grade because of my Yankee accent.

As to my moniker, Avyctes (uh vick teez) is a wizard in a story by Clark Ashton Smith called The Double Shadow.   It's one of my favorite stories by Smith who was a pulp writer in the 20s, 30s and 40s.  I also go by another of Smith's wizard characters called Malygris (mal uh griss) occasionally.  I chose them because Chris Adams is often taken as a user name, and you have to admit, they're unique.

As to my signature, what can I say?  I support the second amendment, I am pro life (and if you're pro choice I don't care to hear about it), and I believe the 2nd should be all the permit we require to carry concealed.  I hold a WV permit and carry as allowed, and when I came across that full quote (which I had to abbreviate to fit the rules of the signature) it blew me away.  Cicero was a Roman philosopher and wrote this nearly 2000 years ago.  Here it is in full:

Quote
There exists a law, not written down anywhere but inborn in our hearts; a law which comes to us not by training or custom or reading but by derivation and absorption and adoption from nature itself; a law which has come to us not from theory but from practice, not by instruction but by natural intuition. I refer to the law which lays it down that, if our lives are endangered by plots or violence or armed robbers or enemies, any and every method of protecting ourselves is morally right. When weapons reduce them to silence, the laws no longer expect one to await their pronouncements. For people who decide to wait for these will have to wait for justice, too and meanwhile they must suffer injustice first
"There exists a law, not written down anywhere, but in our hearts.. that, if our lives are endangered by plots or violence or armed robbers or enemies, any and every method of protecting ourselves is morally right."

My son's buddies started calling him psycho a long time ago because of the more adventurous things he did.  The spelling changed to the simpler version he and I use today with the advent of the web and screen names.  For me to become known as Old Syko was just the natural progression of things.  There's very little either he or I haven't done from flying aerobatics in small planes to running fast boats and bikes to taking on jobs others either turned down or claimed couldn't be done.  If that is syko then so be it!

Well one day I had this used rifle , shot it at a target and hit it good with two shots almost touching . Got on a deer stand about an hour later. Well this gobbler flys up in a tree about 50 (at most) yards away . Keep in mind nothing is in the way ( not one good excuse ) . Well the gun was a mod 64 Winchester and old. I shot 7 times and the turkey sat there. I loaded the rest of the ammo I had and shot 6 more times breaking the limb the turkey was sitting on. Well there were a couple watching so there was no getting by with it. Well one old guy ask if i liked to shoot all my ammo on the first drive . After that he called me SHOOTALL.
Now in my defence the gun was checked by a gunsmith and found shot out and the store gave me my money back. But the nick name stuck.

If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I was stationed in an Air Cavalry unit in Germany when the Gulf war mess erupted and my unit was notified.  I was one of the few gun pilots with any combat experience and all of the younger pilots were after me about what to expect and that sort of thing.  It started out with "go ask CW4 Martin", but somehow got escalated to "go ask the Sensai".  I've been Sensai ever since.

I had just moved to Germany and was pretty mad that I didn't have any guns there.  I had another user name but can't remember it right now.  Anyway, not being very imaginative at stuff like this, I just said "no guns here".  Well, I cured that problem but didn't change the handle... Now I'm in Texas and still don't have "no guns here".  They are coming in the next 3 weeks or so... I have them scattered out all over the country.  KY, OK and UT...  Once they get here, I might change my handle but probably won't be able to come up with anything cool so I'll probably still be "NGH".  Maybe "GotsGunsNow?"

For years I had been Graybeard, because I have a gray beard.  And I still go by that name here in Alaska, and on other forums I was on before coming to this one.  But when I came here it is obvious I needed a new one.

Many years ago when leaving Elmendorf AFB I had been on a 2 month TDY, and had not shaved the entire time.  The Squadron Cheif Clerk and the friends ar CBPO (personnel) let me complete my final out processing in civilian cloths with my beard.  Then we had 14 days travel time, and 30 days leave.  When we arrived at Holloman AFB NM, I had a three and a half months growth of black beard.  When arriving at Hollomaqn I went to the housing office to let them know we already had a house and was moving in.  Had to get the lease approved.  The woman that ran housing saw me and came out questioning me about my beard.  I explained it to her and she dubbed me with the name Sourdough Sam.  The name stuck, especially after I ended up with the job of Wrangler, and wore Jeans, a Stetson, Spurs, and a Sixshooter to work everyday.

So when I came to this forum the handle Sourdough was open so I used it.  The wife says it fits me now better than Graybeard anyway.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I was wondering when a thread like this would start.

My family gave me a Ruger 1-V for my 50th birthday.
Took a week or so to get a scope and reloading supplies for it.
All I could do with it was sit in the den with my daughter and take turns holding it and yelling "Pow, Pow".
When I signed up here, I asked my daughter what I should use for a name. She was 20 then.

Around here, no one refers to families by their last names or other groups by the appropriate name.
It was funny to me to see the church committee that I chaired refered to in meeting minutes as "Billy and them".
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Hey Williamlayton:

Our old 1500 acre 4B Ranch here in SE Oklahoma has been split up years ago between us four siblings since our parents have passed.   The eldest sold their portions as fast as they could.    But I continued ranching and using the 4B Brand on my cattle.  Thus, the handle "FOURBEE"

There's a lot of history behind the 4B.   The Butterfield Stageline ran right down the middle,  north to south,  of the Ranch back in the old days.   The northwest corner was home to a settlement  called Sagetown.   There was a Butterfield Stageline Change Station 1/2 mile south near the crossing of Deadman's Slue.   A small hill, to the east of the Station's (still remaining old hand dug Water Well) ,  is an old Indian burial grounds where a Tombstone,  with a beautiful carving of an  old Colt Revolver,  with the epitaph of a "Thomas Burns", 'Outlaw', who was killed during the attempt robbery of the Butterfield Stage on the bridge crossing Deadman's Slue, on July 4th in the late 1800's.

I'm retired now, with just a few 15 year old Longhorn Steers with horns 5' tip to tip , to remind me of the good ole days.   It's about all I can do to keep the place clean, and mend the fences, and take care of my hobbies and pastime on the internet.  ;D
