I need Professional Help!!!
« on: July 28, 2010, 04:00:55 AM »
Two things happened at the same time.  I acquired a Handi .45-70/.30-30 combo, and a frame and a stock.  I was going to part them out when I got a 3500 check for timber.  Now, I've got both .30-30 and .45-70 in standard 22 inch barrels.  Here's the question, since I've got the bucks, and double on the guns, should I turn the '70 into something more, and do an AI on the .30-30?  Should I shortie the .30-30?  OHH MY...the decisons a Handiholic faces ::)  Next thing is where to put them.  Patty's bitching cause she can't turn over in bed for the in ones there now ;)

I'd shoot em both first. If they are great, don't mess with them, good, hack away, bad, stick with plan A.

Turn the 30-30 into a 30-40 Krag and take the 45-70, cut it way down to barely legal, and shoot 45-70 Specials - 1.655" (for want of a better name). Then go to the range, shoot 20 rounds from each and call your doctor in the morning if you still feel unwell.

IMO the calibers you have cannot be improved upon.  I'd have one of them fitted with a .357 barrel.

When it comes to Handi Holics, Tim IS the professional.  He just needs to send Pete a bill to make it all legal.....just remember Pete, when you have more Handi's than Tim...he will buy more.

The Krag idea sounds pretty good. ;) I've been threatening mine with a reamer but it shoots so good I can't bring myself to do it.

The AI adds velocity. Shortening the barrel costs velocity. You run max or near max loads. I am not seeing a big upside here.

I say shoot the 30-30 as is, you don't need any improvement in that great caliber where you live with big woods. And as been so intelligently stated you will lose what you gain if you shorten it. Also, by making it an AI you lose value and desireability for resale, IF that is ever an issue. It adds little, and nothing, you need, and it destroys much of the value of a great barrel in a great caliber as is. Just load the standard 30-30 with spitzer bullets, you will be pleasently surprised what it can do. Don't jump into changing what aint' broke. Have fun at the loading bench, you will like it as is.
Or, just shoot some Hornady Leverolutions out of it, gets close to the performance of a .308..
Those are my comments on the 30-30, the 45/70, now that's another story for another day....<><....:)

Andy, from what everone has said, plus the fact I have a great shooting 22 inch .30-30, and Tim called me yesterday saying he found a .38-55 barrel for me if I want it.......I think I'll sell the extra .30-30 and build the .38-55.  The .45-70 is going to grow up some.  The disease continues ::) :o ;D :D

Pete, I think that's a great idea. I would hate to see a nice 30-30 barrel hacked on, especially since so many guys would love to have one. The 38-55 should be a lot of fun for you. Keep us posted on it's progress. Congratulations.....<><....:)
