Anyone with a 1:9 twist Hornet?
« on: July 28, 2010, 08:27:05 AM »
Hello,

I had one back in the early 80's but I now see the new Hornets come with 1:9 twist.
Anyone know how the new fast twist Hornets shoot?
My thinking is I want to ream it out to a K-Hornet.

I have a Brno ZBK 110 in Hornet, it's a hammer less break open.
It shoots to good for me to take a chance of messing it up.

P.S. Very nice Forum you have here!

I think the move to a 9 twist Hornet is just an effort to reduce the number of different barrels H&R has to buy.  The origional hornets did just fine with a 1 in 16, and 1 in 12 or 14 is more than necessary.  A 1 in 9 is way more than they need, but then it may not hurt anything.  I would not go out of my way to obtain a fast twist barrel, but I would not let it scare me off either.  Larry

I concur with all the above.  I just got one this spring. To me the advantages are shooting a 50 or 55 grain bullet if you want.  You don't get the velocity but you can do it accurately to a 150 yds.  When you get tired of it or have mastered all you can out of it, have it rechambered.  I am keeping the open sites on it this year, next year plan to add high see through rings and a scope, you have a different gun.  I plan to buy an extra barrel to have it rechambered to .221 Fireball.  The K Hornet or .219 Bee is not enough improvement for the cost involved, might as well get 500 more fps for the same amount of money but then theres the brass and you double your investment. Wish it came in a bull barrel but their standard barrel is quasi bull.

Just wanted to add: What ever I put down the bore 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 VMax's with 13 gr. of Lil Gun behind all went 2" groups or better with open sights at a hundred yards.  The heavier bullets went a little higher due to muzzle jump. A benefit was not having to change the seating depth as the ogive was the same and the extra length just compressed the powder a little more. Great fun.  I used small pistol primers to minimize pressure spikes with the heavier bullets. No problems at all. Almost too easy.

I have always wanted a K-Hornet, don't need just want one.
Just like the hornet I have no plains to hot rod it, but 3000pfs would be
nice out of a K

I have had a Hornet of some kind for over 25 years.
The Brno Hornet I have shoots well under 1 inch at 100yds. I started using Lil'Gun about 5 years
ago in Hornet and my 221 Fireball. I use the 40gr V-max in 22 Hornet, 221, 222 and 223.
I use Lee Neck collet dies for Hornet, 223 and 17 Rem. Lee Neck Collet is some of the best money I ever spent.
No lube needed and cuts way down on neck stretching, More neck stretching happens when sizing
than when case is fired (expander ball) I know it sounds like ad for Lee, I just really like these
Neck collet dies. I did a little test for myself when I first got a 223 set. I have a range at my house.
I loaded 10, 223 cases then fired them in a AR I did this 8 times with same 10 pieces of brass (8 really as I lost 2)
These 8 pieces of brass had grown about .003 in lenght after firing 10 times each. Also never had any problems
with rounds chambering and all this loading was done with out any lube. It is rare that I have to trim any cases
I load using the Neck Collet dies and thats a very big plus for me and lube mess!

Sorry for going off in left field :)

Thanks,

I have an older 1/16 and a newer 1/12.the differance for me is I live in the lead ban area of CA. the 1/16 wont shoot the longer lead free bullits well. but the 1/12 shoots them just fine. I have given the 1/16 to my grandson[ who lives outside of the lead ban area and it does just fine with 45gr lead bullits.

You got me to thinking  ::)

1:9 in Hornet mite be fun to play with some heavy 22cal bullets loaded down to sub-sonic.
It could even take the place of my 25-20 meat gun.

My 1:9 twist hornet Handi has a liking for 55gn Hornady v-max over 1.7gn Trailboss. This is a quiet load  but still above subsonic I think. I will post Crony details for this and 55gn CBE. cast bullet as soon as we get a fine weekend.  I am keen to rechamber to K Hornet . more to improve case life than any gain in performance.

If you want to improve 22 Hornet case life, just get an RCBS X-Die in 22 Hornet, resize everytime with the X-Die, seat with the seater that comes with the X-Die, and use a Lee Factory crimp. Should give you very long case life.
