man, you gotta have a coupla big freezers for all that meat !!!!
we are also limited in our bag limits, which don't make a hole lotta since...
we are over run with whitetail and i have recently seen them in subdivisions
on the front porch of some homes eating flowers from pots. just walk'n around like they own tha place !!!
which they did awhile back. :'(
there are more deer now on the east coast then when the pilgrams landed.
Farming and gardening have increased their populations.

I thought Texas was generous with deer tags. Whitetail- 3 bucks and 2 does, Mule deer- 1 buck, 1 doe..but sometimes ranches also have management permits to shoot off excess deer after the season (and you don't use your personal tags). This past season we did that in February paying $75 for each doe you shot. Being single I only want a couple of deer a year for my personal freezer.

I'm getting ready to buy my next Handi.  I've been set on a 45/70 after
hearing what everyone has said about them.
It would be the 22" barrel gun. I have no experience with them.

Now I am waffeling a bit.  The Classic Carbine in 45LC looks tempting.

I will be using this gun for plinking.  Probably never hunt with it.

I am somewhat recoil sensitive.

I hand load.

Stay with the original thought...45/70 or take a hard look at the 45LC.

You guys that have both, what are the  +/-  of both?

Thanks,

Jon
Yes,with the 45-70 and the 45 Colt you can go,like others said "Mild to wild".
In the 45-70,since you did say "I am somewhat recoil sensitive",you can shoot the Trapdoor loads.
I tend to stay with the Trapdoor loads since I've added an original 1884 Springfield.
This was due to not wanting to blow up my 1884.So,all of my loads are for that very reason.
The loads may not sound too powerful. They are. Bullets are in 2 variations;405gr and 500gr.Full house BP loads
and the 405gr bullet,I've shot more of those comfortably, then Winchester factory 300gr.
Those factory rounds did hurt. These were shot from my Handi.
Molds are a Lee 405grHB and a Lee 500gr.Lube is beeswax and some lard.
With Trail Boss powder, those 405gr seems like pop gun loads.Just a fun light recoiling load.

45 Colt loads, you can go with a fairly wide variety of bullet weights, with velocities.
The "cowboy" ammo, such as Magtech,in the 255gr lead are good.
I have 2 molds,a Lee 255gr RNFP,and an RCBS 270gr SAA.
For the 45 Colt Handi,I can't tell you what the recoil is like.
I can only wish you luck on your choice.

There's only one simple solution.  Get both.  I have them, and I doubt if I'd give up one for the other.  The BC Carbine is a sweet little rifle.  The .45-70 is such a formidable rifle.  Ya gotta love both of them.  They're both extremely accurate and get the job done.

I agree.. As I picked up the BC 45LC carbine yesterday..I now need to be on the lookout for the .45.70 long rifle. I think they would go together nicely on my den walls with a bunch of old military guns I have.

They do indeed.  I went into Jay's, a local sporting goods place here, and was intending to buy the .45 LC to match my Ruger.  Saw the .45-70 BC and just had to have em both! lol  Although I ended up buying the .45-70 that day and the found the .45 colt on davidson's for sale at $265, so I saved 155 bucks by waiting 2 weeks.  hehe  I love them both though and intend to use the colt as my long range add on for my Ruger NMB this deer season.  ;)

Let me get this straight..The 2000 model year and never Buffalo Classics .45-70's .(and other of the rifles manufactured by the same company) are somewhat different than earlier ones? The reason I ask is someone is offered me a used one for $300 shiped and trying to figure out if it would be better to get a brand new one or not.. Thanks..

See the information on the build year list in the FAQs, the asterisked marked barrels on the H&R accessory barrel list can't be fitted to any frame made prior to 2000, and SB2 frames made 1996-1999 can only be fitted with shotgun, 357mag and 44mag barrels due to being outsourced.

So Jay's was selling the 45LC for $420.00?

It was $405 + tax here.  Guess my math was off slightly.  Although now it is $415 at the same store.  8)

I have both, but I would get the 45 lc wile you still can and then send your reciver in and get the 45-70 latter if you still want it, but if you dont like recoil I dont think your going to like the 45-70.

What would the reason be to buy a new BC .45-70 vs. one that is 20 years old? Is the reciever any "hardier" in the never ones?

I had went in there this weekend and looked at quite a few different topics. Thats why I remembered something about some changes around 1999/2000. "the post '99 high pressure SB2 frames". I just thought someone could answer the question off the top of their head. My gut feeling was yes there was some improvements in the past 20 years. This type of firearms is more adaptable (yet a simple design) that my bolt actions, semi automatics..etc..

The problem is if you want any of the high pressure accessory barrels, H&R won't fit a 204, 22-250, 243, 308, 30-06 or any of the other modern barrels to any SB2 frame made before 2000, so you're making the frame less useful by choosing and older firearm as a platform for multiple barrels.

I have been thinking of ordering a Carbine from CDNN @ $229 also.  I am not all too familiar with the pricing on these but if the Carbine is $229 and shipping from CDNN is $18 then I pay $25 at my FFL for the hoopla that he has to do is it still a good price?  Total is $272 which I understand is still very reasonable for any firearm of reputation and quality however I am just trying to check in with the experts on their thoughts.

Does CDNN have a percentage mark up for using a credit card like Bud's does?

Yep, even on sale at Davidson's they are $307 now.  When I got mine for $265 some months ago.  The CDNN will be the cheapest I have seen.  8)

Picked up my 45LC Carbine last night from my FFL guy.  I like it.  Got it for $248 including shipping from CDNN.
Great people.  Bought dies from Midway.  They arrived.  Midway had no 45LC brass.  Had a hard time finding any
45 LC locally.  Ended up witha box of Winny 225 Silvertips.  20 rounds.  I'll shoot those and then reload them.

Did the JB paste thing through the barrel this morning along with 500 dry fires on a snap cap.

Out this afternoon to shoot it.  I'll post my experiance later.

Again, thanks for all the comments and advise.  45-70 Barrel may come later, who knows.

Jay's Sporting Goods here has some in stock for the first time in a long time.  If you call their store, I know they will ship it to you.  It's Winchester brand and I've got 200 of them I've been reloading with no issues or reduced longevity.  I have done BP and Smokeless loads, including some real barnstormers in H110 without any splits, pocket breaks etc.  Anyway their number is  (989) 386-3475 if you would like to try.  They have a website, but brass comes and goes so fast, they don't list it there.  It was in stock this evening when I picked up bullets.  ;)
