Alexander Blakely and his guns
« on: July 28, 2010, 09:06:25 PM »
A new website about A. Blakely and his cannon designs; many of which were used by the South during our Civil War.  Alexander Theophilus Blakely

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Thanks Boom J.  I learned a lot about Blakely cannon already and I'm only about 1/3 into the text.  The "Picture Book 1865" alone is worth the price of admission!!  For a seacoast gun lover, this is high grade ore!

Bookmarked into 5 different categories, and downloading started to create a pamphlet,

Tracy and Mike
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

From the poem  Screw-Guns  by Rudyard Kipling

Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Allen, are you gonna be OK! :P Alright, I'm teasing you, I'm just teasing; you know what a weak will I have when it comes to stuff like this. :D  I swear, I saw this site for the first time the other day on the "Company of Military Historians" forum that our very own "cannonmn" moderates; scouts honor! ;)

Allen,
I'm glad to hear that the sounds of birdsong and cat chuffs have bolstered your spirits, that usually does the trick for me too. :P

The guy that authored this Blakely site posted it on the CMH forum, and there arose a minor controversy about copyrights on the photos, which in turn sparked a little verbal joust between him and C-mn; it's good to see that JM is as feisty as ever. :)

BTW - I agree with your opinion that this a very useful site, and I admire the fact that you posted it here first. ;)
