I was given a couple of Black and Tan pups......
« on: July 29, 2010, 04:03:34 AM »
and now i'm looking for a little knowledge.  Where can i find books, videos, or someone to tell me how to proceed with them.  I'll be hunting lions with them later on this winter with the guy who gave them to me, but  my question is what do I do in the mean time to get them ready to go?  What do they need to know and what do I try to teach them?

The first thing i would do is try to teach them to come back. I don't know one thing about the bigger hounds. I have owned and raised beagles for 40 years now. I always turned a pup loose where i knew there were rabbits and they seem to learn on there own. I only owned 3 that would check in with me if a rabbit holes up somewhere. The rest wanted to take off from there and see if they could find another track. Most of the guys around here are running Black and Tans for fox and yotes. They tell me they are real easy to handle. Just put them down where they know there is game and they pick it up on there own. Sure wasn't much help was i? ;D

No, actually you were a lot of help!  Getting them to come back to me isn't a particularly easy job, though.  They definately have a mind of their own.  Its getting cold enough now, I need to put them on some bobcat tracks.
