powder question

ive searched and searched but cant find the answer im looking for. I have 1 lb can of dupont imr 4227. can i use this instead of h4227. I know the newer stuff says you can but what about the old stuff. I am just getting into reloading and want to be safe. also does anyone use red dot for 500 s&w. I have alot of the old metal cans of it.

there will some variation between the two i would start at the low end of the charge and work up. i  use imr 4227 for my 44mag smith&wesson it does well

7th edition Hornady manual gives data for IMR 4227 in the 500 S&W
.
350 gr Hornady XTP-Mag start load IMR 4227 35.1 gr. Max 42.1

500 gr FP-XTP IMR 4227 start 24.0 gr Max 33.3 gr.

+1. I have contacted Hodgdon several times by e-mail with a question and always got a speedy and courteous reply. I know new formulations of of IMR4227 and H4227 are the same, but cannot say about the old stuff.

bring up the hodgon site on your computer . it will give you load data for H-powders , IMR-powder and Winchester-powdres as it is distributer for all three. Then you can compare the loads and see the difference if any.

I contacted hodgdon and am awaiting a reply. On the burn chart these two are side by side. I believe I will start low and see what happens. does the 7th edition hae any loads with imr for 440 or 370 gr. I need to get me a new manual. all i have is the new lee and there is no 500 data in it.

Did you go there ? they have the charts on line maybe the 50 is listed
